The Staff Accountant II is responsible for performing a wide range of accounting and financial duties with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and compliance. This position supports the month-end close process, account reconciliations, and preparation of financial reports. The Staff Accountant II assists in ensuring the integrity of the company’s financial data, provides analysis to support management decisions, and may take the lead on more complex accounting tasks and projects. This role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, and a solid understanding of accounting principles and practices. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with job costing, project financial tracking, and reconciliation. This role is critical in ensuring accurate financial reporting and supporting project managers with timely and reliable cost information.
- Analyze financial data and provide variance explanations to management.
- Prepare and post journal entries for month-end and year-end close.
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.Assist with preparation of monthly financial statements.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including construction-specific accounts such as WIP (work-in-progress), retention, and job cost allocations.
- Support audits by preparing schedules and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and special projects as assigned.
- Formulate and prepare a variety of management reports, providing accurate financial data and analysis to support leadership in strategic and operational decision-making.
- Perform job costing analysis by monitoring costs against budgets, identifying variances, and preparing cost-to-complete reports.
- Assist project managers and operations teams with financial reporting, cost tracking, and forecasting.
- Ensure proper documentation and compliance with internal controls.
- Continuously improve processes to enhance accuracy and efficiency in project accounting.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, operations) to resolve accounting issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in the construction industry preferred.
- Strong knowledge of job costing, project accounting principles, GAAP, and general accounting practices.
- Familiarity with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP/accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or similar), with ability to analyze and interpret financial data.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work both independently and within a team.
