Sr. SmartSignal Engineer

Annual salary: $ 107,000.00 - 135,300.00

Position Highlights

The Stations Maintenance Engineering Division provides operational support and maintenance engineering services for

both Generation and Transmission Stations assets. Our group is comprised of 7 teams covering civil, electrical, mechanical,

and protection & control disciplines. Whether through maintenance program development, equipment failure analysis,

assessment of critical asset health, equipment forced outage response, or a myriad of other duties, our contributions are

critical for the safe and reliable operation of BC Hydro's power system while meeting the requirements of system planners,

regulators, customers, and other stakeholders.

The Stations Maintenance – Generation Electrical team provides predictive maintenance, electrical maintenance and

technical expertise to BC Hydro Generating Stations for the following equipment: hydro and turbo generators, rotating

exciters, slip rings and brush gear, power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, isophase bus, bus bar and

terminal equipment.

The Stations Maintenance – Generation Electrical team has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Senior-level

Engineer with predictive maintenance and data analytics experience to join a team of dedicated professionals based at the

BC Hydro Edmonds office.


What you'll do

This position requires a broad range of engineering knowledge including process, electrical and mechanical engineering as

well as an individual with practical skills in extracting value from a variety of value-added data types. The SmartSignal

Senior Engineer will primarily work with subject matter experts, maintenance engineers, external industry leaders in the field

of Predictive Maintenance (PdM), as well as software suppliers and developers.

Develop, advance and sustain the PdM Program at Generating stations while facilitating a common BC Hydro


maintenance approach.

Act as leader across business groups to promote key instrumentation and controls upgrades for improved equipment

diagnostics and modeling, as part of the development of a Predictive Maintenance Program.

Constructively work with crews, maintenance engineers and subject matter experts to understand equipment failure

modes and develop diagnostics via GE’s SmartSignal Software to accurately detect future equipment problems.

Initiate fleet wide instrumentation upgrades and pilot studies to advance predictive condition monitoring of Generation


assets.

Facilitate the development of PdM business cases that are defendable and strategic.

Perform advanced skills as a SmartSignal Analyst.
Provide SmartSignal training, guidance, consultation and back-up support to other users.
Perform data analytics in support of enhanced business outcomes.


What you bring


The successful candidate must have:

Bachelor of engineering degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Computer Engineering or other relevant discipline recognized by


universities in Canada.

Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Engineers and


Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

Minimum of eight (8) years experience in a relevant engineering field, with six (6) years of experience in predictive

maintenance of hydro-electric or thermal generation equipment, reactive equipment, or predictive maintenance experience

in another relevant sector.

Fully developed technical knowledge in electric utility engineering discipline.

Extensive practical and strong knowledge of predictive maintenance.


The successful candidate will also:

Be able to independently provide predictive maintenance services to various teams to develop maintenance programs.
Be able to develop collaborative relationships within their team, with other parts of their organization and outside of their


organization in support of business objectives.

Be proficient with MS Office (including advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access & and PowerPoint), Adobe


Acrobat Professional.

Have experience with databases, data analytics, basic coding, detecting anomaly data, and advanced pattern recognition.
Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
Have excellent presentation skills at all levels.
Must have a valid Class 5: Driver's License

The following additional qualifications are an asset for this role:

Experience using GE’s SmartSignal Software or other predictive maintenance software tool.
Experience implementing fleet strategies, artificial intelligence, and/or machine learning.
Involvement in external organizations as it relates to predictive maintenance.

What else you should know

Majority of work is performed within the office environment. Some travel and time away from home will be required. There

will be exposure to hazards from operation, testing and/or construction equipment when at the field sites.

Candidates with lesser experience may be considered for a position appropriate to their level of experience.
