Position Summary:
The Lead Shop Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the shop, including the repair, maintenance, and servicing of vehicles, pumps, and other oilfield equipment. This role ensures all mechanical work is performed efficiently and safely, with a strong focus on maintaining equipment reliability. The Lead Shop Mechanic also supervises junior mechanics, provides guidance, and ensures compliance with company and industry standards.
Key Roles / Responsibilities:
•Leads a team of shop mechanics, including Shop Mechanic 1, Mechanic 2, and other support personnel.
•Assigns tasks and manages workflow to ensure timely completion of repairs and maintenance.
•Provides technical guidance, troubleshooting assistance, and training to mechanics.
•Ensures safety protocols are strictly followed within the shop.
•Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on vehicles and oilfield equipment.
•Conducts routine preventive maintenance to avoid equipment failure.
•Oversees major repairs such as engine overhauls, transmission work, and pump rebuilding.
•Inspects and tests equipment to verify the quality of repairs.
•Monitors and manages parts and tool inventory; ensure availability of necessary components for repairs.
•Maintains detailed records of repairs, maintenance schedules, and parts used.
•Assists in ordering and stocking parts, ensuring cost-effective purchasing.
•Collaborates with the Shop Manager and other departments to prioritize repair work based on operational needs.
•Communicates equipment status, repair timelines, and potential delays to management.
•Serves as a point of contact for technical support for field teams and operators.
•Ensures all equipment repairs comply with industry regulations and company standards.
•Promotes a culture of safety, ensuring all mechanics use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety procedures.
•Participates in safety meetings and training sessions to stay updated on new protocols and regulations.
Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
•Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in mechanical repair, particularly with oilfield equipment and pumps.
•Prior leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.
•Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
•Knowledge of pump systems, engines, transmissions, and other relevant equipment.
•Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and repair guides.
•ASE Certification or other relevant mechanical certifications preferred.
•CDL with a clean driving record is a plus.
•Strong leadership and team management skills.
•Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Working Conditions:
•Bending, lifting, climbing, pushing, pulling, kneeling, sitting stand, walk, kneel, stoop, squat, pull, push, climb, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and see and standing (occasionally) for long periods of time.
•The essential duties of this position require moderate to heavy lifting and carrying.
•Must be able to position oneself to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels and demonstrate manual dexterity and be able to use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
•Exposure to moderate noise levels, vibrations, and bright lights; and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases; and all climate types including hot and cold temperatures, humidity, rain, snow, etc.
•Able to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection and hard hats when needed.
•React quickly using hands, fingers, or feet.
•Must be able to comprehend and follow written and oral instructions.
•Must be able to complete tasks even with frequent interruptions.
•Must be able to use discretion and independent judgment as needed.
•Must be able to speak clearly on the phone and to fellow workers.
