Job Overview The Shop Foreman oversees the daily operations of the fabrication shop, coordinating with various departments to ensure efficient workflow and production. Reporting to the Shop Superintendent, the Shop Foreman is responsible for supervising multiple Foremen and department heads. This role also requires technical expertise in welding, fabrication, and safety, along with strong leadership abilities to ensure adherence to quality and production standards.
·Team Leadership: Supervise the foremen ensuring alignment with production goals.
·Production Coordination: Work closely with the QC Manager and Shop Superintendent to ensure proper staffing levels and that production targets are met. Provide backup support to Mechanics and Lead personnel when needed.
·Equipment Use: Ensure that all Fabricators are proficient in the safe operation of essential shop equipment, including forklifts, grinders, and cranes.
·Training & Qualifications: Collaborate with the Welding Program Manager on Fabricator placement, support, and training. Ensure adherence to welding procedures and project drawings to ensure accuracy in materials and assembly.
·Safety & Quality Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to company safety policies and quality standards. Ensure all team members wear appropriate safety gear and follow TMF’s safety and quality policies.
·Collaboration & Resource Allocation: Coordinate with other departments, including Mechanics, to dynamically allocate manpower and resources as needed for each project. Work with other department heads to troubleshoot issues and enhance workflow.
·Time & Record Keeping: Oversee production time records, including verifying accuracy for payroll, vacation requests, union classifications, and pay rate changes.
·Equipment Safety: Ensure the safe operation of cranes and rigging equipment. Continue education in rigging safety, coordinated with the Superintendent and HSE Department.
·Union Contract Knowledge: Maintain a strong understanding of shop union contracts to ensure proper labour relations and compliance.
·Shift Turnover: Manage Day and Swing Shift production turnover to ensure smooth transitions between shifts.
·Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Shop Superintendent, including adjusting schedules for overtime or weekend work as necessary.
·Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in metal fabrication or a related field preferred.
·Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in metal fabrication, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. A minimum of 4+ years of welding experience is highly preferred.
·Strong understanding of welding techniques and the ability to operate welding equipment with skill.
·Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, weld procedures, and technical specifications.
·Ability to supervise, mentor, and motivate Foremen and production staff.
·Knowledge of safety protocols, especially in crane and rigging operations.
·Familiarity with timekeeping, record-keeping, and union labour contracts.
·Basic math skills, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing simple numbers without a calculator.
·Ability to adapt to changes in workload and direction, and to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
·Standing, walking, and working in shop conditions for extended periods.
·Required to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) at all times.
