Located in Colbert, Georgia, the Madison Biomass Facility produces 55 net megawatts of renewable energy by transforming responsibly harvested wood biomass into electricity. Designed to meet both environmental and operational excellence, the plant features advanced emissions control technologies—including a Foster Wheeler boiler, hot precipitator, and SCR system. Madison contributes to cleaner air, reliable energy, and the long-term sustainability of Georgia’s energy infrastructure by delivering consistent, low-carbon power to the community.
The Shift Supervisor at the Madison Biomass facility ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable production of electricity and steam from wood biomass during their shift, while serving as the senior on-duty leader. In addition to performing Control Room Operator duties, they oversee all aspects of plant operations, fuel handling, and coordination of maintenance and engineering activities. They are responsible for enforcing safety protocols, maintaining compliance with operational and environmental standards, and making critical real-time decisions to protect personnel, equipment, and the environment. This role is essential to sustaining plant reliability, managing emergencies, and ensuring continuous renewable energy production.
Your scope of responsibility as Shift Supervisor will include the following primary functions:
- Oversee all plant operations, including startup, shutdown, and safe operation of the biomass boiler, turbine generator, emissions control systems (hot precipitator, SCR), wood fuel handling systems, and auxiliary systems, while performing Control Room Operator duties.
- Ensure site safety, environmental compliance, and operational procedures are followed; identify hazards, conduct plant tours, monitor particulate emissions, and manage ash byproducts.
- Serve as lead system representative for assigned systems and maintain accurate shift logs and reports, including fuel usage, production output, outages, repairs, performance indices, and biomass feedstock quality.
- Review chemical and emissions monitoring results, direct corrective actions, and coordinate electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance under the Maintenance Manager’s guidance.
- Monitor daily consumption and inventory of wood biomass fuel, chemicals, water, and other consumables, ensuring proper replenishment and safe storage of feedstock.
- Ensure proper switching, tagging, and lockout of equipment per approved procedures and industry best practices.
- Support the Operations Manager in departmental administration and plant management; provide feedback to employees to ensure compliance with procedures and environmental standards.
- Plan, direct, and supervise preventive and corrective maintenance on all systems, including boilers, turbines, fuel handling systems, and emissions controls.
- Write, review, and revise operating procedures to maintain compliance with plant operations, maintenance, environmental regulations, and personnel requirements.
- Assist in orientation, training, and development of O&M Technicians, including preparing lesson plans, handouts, visual aids, exams, and biomass-specific qualification standards.
- Participate in recruiting, screening, interviewing, and selecting candidates, and maintain logs and reports related to renewable energy production.
- Provide advice to Operations and Maintenance Managers on technical and administrative aspects of shift operations and communicate with on-site personnel and external stakeholders.
- Represent the company in interactions with the public, power customers, vendors, contractors, regulators, and other parties, supporting administration, engineering, and maintenance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by plant management.
Safety is a core value of NAES and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to be mentally alert and work safely at all times. All NAES managers and supervisors have a direct and important role in ensuring that all work is performed in a healthy and safe manner. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each Supervisor’s performance. This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:
- Conduct and support regular safety meetings (at least monthly).
- Address safety in all group meetings.
- Conduct inspections and observations by establishing a regular inspection process for the work area and a safety observation process for ongoing work.
- Lead these activities in accordance with any rules, requirements, or guidance established within your business unit, group, or division.
- Involve all NAES teammates in these activities.
- Analyze results, write work orders, and provide training and education to eliminate hazards, address at-risk behavior, and meet company regulatory requirements.
- Conduct safety observation tours of high-risk activities (e.g., confined space) to verify that employees are following safe practices, company procedures, and OSHA regulations.
- Hold one-on-one sessions with direct reports to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations, and coach safe behaviors.
- Respond to all safety-related incidents, including injuries, incidents, and near misses; write a report explaining what happened, identify the cause, and recommend corrective actions based on established business unit or division practices. Follow up as necessary to ensure corrective actions are taken.
The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and receives general direction from the Plant Manager. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for directing and overseeing operations personnel and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the plant and its related processes.
Physical demands include standing for extended periods of time, climbing multiple levels of stairs, climbing ladders over 50 feet in height, entering and exiting equipment cabs, traversing uneven or elevated surfaces, and working inside confined spaces. The role routinely requires lifting up to 50 pounds and performing tasks from elevated platforms or walkways.
Work may be performed in conditions involving dust, wood particles, fumes, high noise levels, and extreme temperatures near operating equipment. Outdoor tasks in all weather conditions are required, including in high-heat environments adjacent to biomass processing systems.
The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory and may include hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing, steel-toe boots, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), respirators, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions are enforced in and around the facility to ensure plant safety and environmental compliance.
All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.
The Shift Supervisor follows a modified DuPont rotating 12-hour shift schedule, ensuring 24/7 coverage through a structured rotation of day and night shifts that includes built-in rest days to support continuous and reliable plant operations. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status will also be required.
Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.
This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $40 to $46 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus.
