Reporting to the Director, Project Delivery with a dotted line to the Goldfield Project Director, the Senior Project Controls Specialist is a key member of the Goldfield Project execution team. This role is accountable for developing, managing, and forecasting project budgets, monitoring cost performance, and ensuring proactive cost control across all phases of project execution. This position is a hybrid role based at our Toronto, ON office, however we are also open to considering candidates located throughout Canada.
While interfacing with Corporate Projects, Finance, and Supply Chain teams, this position works directly with site construction, engineering, procurement, and commissioning teams to maintain accurate cost tracking, control change, and provide clear, timely reporting to both site and corporate stakeholders. This includes establishing cost baselines, applying earned value principles, implementing AACEI best practices, and ensuring contract and change management processes are rigorously followed. As such, this role plays a critical role in ensuring the Goldfield Project is delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest performance standards.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and oversee comprehensive project budgets for mining projects, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
- Track, analyze, and forecast capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenses (OPEX).
- Implement capital program controls to ensure the project meets cost and budget management requirements.
- Implement Earned Value Management (EVM) to monitor financial health and performance.
- Ensure compliance with financial reporting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure appropriate tracking and management of contracts, scopes of work, change control procedures, and purchase orders.
- Support development and management of project plans, including the Project Execution Plans, needed for each project.
- Develop and maintain project schedules using Primavera P6, MS Project, or other scheduling tools.
- Conduct critical path analysis (CPA) and schedule risk assessments to identify potential delays.
- Lead scenario planning and schedule optimization for mining operations, including exploration, construction, and production phases.
- Implement change management process to evaluate and approve scope, schedule, and cost variations.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with mining project execution, supply chain disruptions, and environmental factors.
- Develop contingency plans as appropriate.
- Gather and analyze data from various project controls aspects (i.e. earned value analysis, schedule variance, and risk management) to provide a comprehensive view of the project's status
- Prepare detailed reports on cost trends, variance analysis, and project performance metrics.
- Establish the reporting criteria, content and format for monthly project status reports, cost variance reporting, forecasts, budget updates, change control notices, and quarterly presentations to Centerra Gold management.
- Provide executive-level dashboards and KPI tracking for project stakeholders, including investors, regulatory bodies, and senior management.
- Recommend corrective actions to optimize project delivery and cost efficiency.
- Collaborate with site and corporate managers, engineers, procurement teams, and financial personnel to align project objectives.
- Mentor and guide less experienced staff regarding project controls, fostering a high-performance project controls culture.
- Work closely with contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure compliance and efficiency.The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:
- 10+ years of experience in relevant project controls environment, 6-8 years in the mining industry is preferred.
- University degree in engineering, construction management, or business, with AACEI certification.
- Extensive knowledge of Earned Value Management (EVM) principles.
- Extensive knowledge of SAP software.
- Extensive knowledge of Power Query.
- 5+ years of experience with Primavera P6 scheduling.- Successful track record of providing project control support for engineering, construction, and commissioning stages of project(s) in an international environment.
- Demonstrated experience directing internal and client teams involved in multiple activities.
- Ability to strategically and tactically organize and structure activities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Strong decision-making & problem-solving skills, with appropriate risk management competencies.
