Job Description

Smiths Detection is looking for a senior scientist to develop chemical and biological detection and identification technologies. The senior scientist will work independently and with cross-functional teams to assess technologies, develop prototypes, and ultimately be part of creating the next generation of detection products for Smiths Detection. The senior scientist will be a subject matter expert in our detection technologies and assist Service, Operations, and Sales with any issues related to science and technology underlying our products. The senior scientist will also help manage the research laboratories and maintain all applicable health, safety, and regulatory standards.

Job duties to include but are not limited to:

Subject Matter Expert in chemical and/or biological detection
Technology Watch and Technology Evaluation of detection technologies
Technical Proposal Writing and monitoring of external funding opportunities
Science and Technology lead for cross-functional product development teams
Assay and Method development for existing and new products
Patent applications and review
Science and Technology support to Operations, Sales, and Service
Manage laboratory and equipment to ensure both safety and operation
Represent Smiths Detection at technical conferences, customer meetings, test events, and other external interactions
Collaborate with global Smiths team at different sites
Potential travel up to 10%, may include international travel


Qualifications

Education and Experience: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a STEM field OR Masters or equivalent degree in a STEM field with 2 to 6 years of industry experience in developing detection products, OR Bachelors' or equivalent degree in a STEM field with 8 to 10 years of industry experience in developing detection products.


Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Chemical Detection Technology, especially ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy
Biological Detection Technology, especially PCR, genetic and protein sequencing, mass spectrometry, and molecular assays
Chemometrics and Machine Learning
Statistical Analysis
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Leadership skills with small project teams
Knowledge of laboratory and laboratory equipment safety
Possess or be able to successfully obtain a US Security Clearance at the SECRET level

The compensation for this position ranges from $84,900.00 - $198,100.00/yr and will vary depending on factors including level of school completed and type of position requirements for skills, whether technical or non-
