U.S. Thermal Development
team as a
Senior Project Developer
.
This role will play a critical part in leading and coordinating
thermal power project development efforts
—from origination through execution. It requires someone with strong
program management skills
, commercial acumen, and the ability to drive
multi-disciplinary project teams
across technical, financial, regulatory, and legal workstreams.
The ideal candidate will be a
self-starter
with experience in
thermal or broader energy markets
, who thrives in a remote-first, fast-moving environment and is comfortable leading projects in various stages of development.
You will contribute to our team through the following responsibilities:
Project & Business Development
•Identify, evaluate, and execute development or acquisition opportunities for thermal power generation assets.
•Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams responsible for project development and due diligence efforts, including engineering, permitting, legal, finance, commercial, and external partners.
•Travel as needed to project sites and stakeholder meetings, especially across California, Arizona, and Michigan.
•Consolidate technical, regulatory, and commercial inputs to support project valuation and internal investment decisions.
Market & Stakeholder Engagement
•Build and maintain strong relationships with public utilities, load-serving entities, project stakeholders, project developers, OEMs, EPCs, and other market participants.
•Represent Capital Power at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities to foster business relationships and enhance market intelligence.
Investment & Financial Analysis
•Support preparation of investment recommendations and business cases aligned with corporate screening criteria.
•Collaborate with finance and valuation teams to understand and refine project economics, modeling inputs, and risk assessments.
Contract Negotiation & Execution
•Participate in negotiations for off-take agreements, joint ventures, lease agreements, project permits, financing documents, and other commercial arrangements.
•Support regulatory and permitting efforts to ensure project viability.
Strategic Planning & Budgeting
•Contribute to annual business planning, strategic roadmaps, and development budgets.
•Provide market insights to inform corporate development strategies and investment decisions.
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
•Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or related discipline.
•MBA or relevant graduate degree is preferred.
Experience:
•Minimum 5 years of project development or project management experience in the energy sector, ideally focused on thermal or utility-scale generation projects.
•Strong cross-functional leadership, including experience coordinating permitting, engineering, stakeholder engagement, and commercial deal structuring.
•Knowledge of U.S. energy markets, including market structures, transmission, and regional dynamics (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO).
•Experience with land acquisition, lease structuring, and permitting processes.
•Experience negotiating PPAs, tolling agreements, and infrastructure-related contracts is preferred.
Technical & Social Process Skills:
•Effective communicator with demonstrated ability to coordinate across diverse teams.
•Strong project management capability and the ability to lead meetings, manage timelines, and drive accountability.
•Financial acumen with the ability to support modeling assumptions and review outputs.
•Highly self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working independently in a remote setting.
Working Conditions:
•Hybrid office/work-from-home position based in our downtown Phoenix location.
•This position requires up to 30% travel.
Additional Details:
•The pay range for this position is $126,825 to $138,840. Specific compensation will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and prior experience.
•This position is eligible for health care benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, and an annual bonus (estimated at 15%).
