Senior Power Systems & Grid Modernization Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior Power Systems & Grid Modernization Engineer to lead advanced utility planning and modernization initiatives. This role involves driving the integration of distributed energy resources (DER), developing next-generation planning tools, leveraging digital twins, and optimizing advanced metering infrastructure (AMI 2.0) capabilities. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and vendors to deliver strategic, data-driven solutions that enhance grid reliability, enable DER integration, and support long-term infrastructure planning.
• Distribution System Planning – Develop long-term distribution system plans, including 10-year capital investment strategies, substation upgrades, and grid enhancement projects.
• Grid Modernization Leadership – Spearhead initiatives to transition from legacy planning practices to advanced analytics-driven frameworks, including time-series planning and probabilistic forecasting.
• DER Integration & Hosting Capacity – Lead studies and modeling efforts for DER hosting capacity, ensuring compliance with CPUC Distribution Resource Plan (DRP) mandates.
• Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI 2.0) – Define and implement planning and operational use cases leveraging high-resolution AMI data for grid visibility and operational improvements.
• Digital Twin Development – Design and manage digital twin prototypes for substations and feeders to simulate and optimize grid performance.
• Analytics & Automation – Create Python-based data pipelines, dashboards, and automation scripts to accelerate planning cycles and enhance operational efficiency.
• Stakeholder & Vendor Management – Serve as product owner and technical lead during RFI/RFP processes, managing software vendors and collaborating with internal IT and business units.
• AI & Machine Learning Applications – Evaluate emerging AI/ML solutions to enhance grid forecasting, planning insights, and automation of operational tasks.
• Regulatory & Compliance Support – Provide data-driven insights to support regulatory filings, CPUC compliance requirements, and reporting obligations.
- Education:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or related field.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.- 8+ years of progressive experience in electric utility distribution planning, grid modernization, and advanced engineering solutions.
- Proven track record in implementing enterprise planning tools, digital twin simulations, and AMI-based analytics.
- Experience managing cross-functional engineering teams, vendors, and strategic client initiatives.
- Power Systems Software: CYME, PowerWorld, OpenDSS, MATLAB/Simulink, pandapower.
- Programming & Analytics: Python, SQL, C++, dashboard creation, and data pipeline automation.- Modeling & Forecasting: Time-series load forecasting, probabilistic planning, and DER integration studies.
- Hands-on experience with AI/ML applications for utility planning and operations.
- Project Leadership: Agile methodologies, RFI/RFP management, and stakeholder engagement.
Licensing: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), Electrical – California (active).
Familiarity with Volt/VAR optimization and wildfire mitigation strategies.
Knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure supporting substation automation and AMI networks.
