AltaGas - Sr. Operations Engineer
AltaGas is seeking a Senior Operations Engineer to support our Ferndale, WA team! The Senior Engineer supports day-to-day operations at the AltaGas Ferndale Terminal by providing hands-on technical expertise, driving risk-informed improvements, and executing small capital projects in close collaboration with the facility leadership team.
This role is intended to be located at AltaGas’ Ferndale terminal in Ferndale, WA; however, candidates will be considered to work from AltaGas' Calgary, Alberta headquarters. Preference will be given to candidates in the Ferndale, WA area.
Primary Duties
•Provide hands-on technical support in the field, troubleshoot operational issues, and apply sound engineering judgment to make timely, informed decisions in collaboration with the facility leadership team.
•Oversee the site’s risk management process by proactively identifying and assessing risks, ensuring they are communicated, and tracking mitigation actions through to resolution.
•Collaborate with field leadership to identify and implement operational improvements and support investment planning for targeted capital projects. This includes crafting a 1- to 3-year execution strategy for the asset.
•Lead small plant modifications through the Management of Change (MOC) process and prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) for process, mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical work scopes.
•Collaborate with the Projects team to support on-site design reviews, HAZOPs, and other technical assessments, ensuring alignment between project planning and operational needs.
•Manage small site-based projects, including development of framing documents, design coordination, cost estimating, execution planning and coordination, and cost control.
•Support a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with Washington State environmental and operational regulations through active participation in audits, training, and incident response efforts.
•Share technical knowledge with peers and junior staff.

Education
•Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. Mechanical and petroleum engineering will be considered with applicable experience.
Experience
•8+ years of oil and gas industry experience.
•Previous employment directly at an oil and gas company is considered an asset.
Licenses and Certifications
•Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensed with the Washington Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors (for American applicants), OR Professional designation P.Eng., P.L. (Eng.), or P.Tech. (Eng.) registered with APEGA and/or EGBC (for Canadian applicants).
Skills and Abilities
•Extensive technical expertise in the design, operation, and optimization of natural gas midstream and LPG terminal infrastructure.
•Excellent understanding of the regulations, adopted codes, and industry standards that govern facilities and pipelines in the State of Washington (e.g., ASME, OSHA, PHMSA, DOT, local County and State building codes, etc.).
•Proficiency in Microsoft 365 suite (Microsoft Office, Excel, etc.).
•Familiarity with standard engineering tools, including process simulators (HYSYS/Promax), PI Vision/Datalink, and Maximo.
•Experienced in facilitating and participating in PHAs, HAZOPs, and other structured risk assessments to identify process safety risks.
•Comfortable working in an industrial setting (e.g., climbing ladders/platforms, uneven surfaces, performing confined space entries, etc.).
•Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a company vehicle.
•Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations relevant to gas plant operations, with a track record of maintaining compliance.
•Consistently demonstrates honesty, transparency, and ethical decision-making, taking ownership of actions and ensuring safety and compliance are never compromised.
•Demonstrates a proactive approach to learning new technologies, processes, and regulations, and applies that knowledge to improve plant operations and adapt to evolving industry standards.
•Experience managing multiple operational priorities simultaneously in a dynamic plant environment, balancing urgent field issues, project deadlines, and stakeholder communications.
Compensation
We offer a competitive salary range of $98,000 to $157,000 per year for this role, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. We are also proud to provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off from day one.
