This position will be responsible for supporting the design and development of novel test rigs and machinery related to Direct Air Carbon Capture at ZCS’s Brighton, CO location. Additional responsibilities may include remote engineering and design support for other ZCS engineering initiatives.
- Manage and execute full life-cycle development of process and mechanical equipment for test rigs
- Design, assemble, commission, and operate test rigs and DAC equipment at our test facility
- Train operations staff on new equipment and support their ongoing use and modification of that equipment
- Support installs of vendor equipment in our Brighton facility (Factory/Site Acceptance Testing and Installation/Operational Qualification)
- Prepare cost estimates, budgets, and schedules for the design, fabrication, and procurement of new equipment
- Develop experimental procedures and execute them to evaluate new mechanical systems and validate them for use in ZCS DAC facilities
- Write technical documentation (Standard Operating Procedures) for machine operators
- Conduct and participate in safety and design reviews and proactively raise concerns and develop solutions to problems
- Evaluate data from test rigs, pilot, and production equipment to determine overall performance, reliability and safety
- Document existing equipment and design retrofits and upgrades for equipment then manage the fabrication and installation of the upgrades.
- Ability to travel less than 10% of the time to support offsite activities
- At least 6 years of progressive responsibility designing, modifying, and upgrading custom industrial equipment
- 2D/3D CAD software Autodesk Inventor/AutoCAD strongly preferred
- Experience designing and working with equipment for steam use, chemical process equipment, conveyors, or HVAC equipment
- Familiarity with engineering design and manufacturing tools (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, Process Flow Diagrams, Bill of Materials Generation, Engineering Change Orders etc.)
- Startup experience and ability to work on cross-functional teams
- Experience working on remote teams
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to deliver detailed technical presentations in support of engineering reviews
- Hands-on experience, professional or otherwise, fabricating, assembling, and fixing mechanical systems.
- Experience working in the carbon capture space
- Experience working in on small mechanical engineering teams.
- Experience with 3d printing
- Experience with prototyping and “fail fast / learn fast” projects
- Ability to operate basic hand and power tools
- Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner
- Ability to shift tasks and project quickly depending on changing company goals and directions
- Ability to write clear and comprehensive technical documentation including machine Standard Operating Procedures, Bill of Materials, and technical engineering drawings
- Solid understanding of core concepts including fluid dynamics, mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science with working knowledge designing equipment with above concepts
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical / chemical / industrial engineering with 6-10 years of direct hands-on experience in mechanical systems design, process equipment design or similar role
- Must be able to lift/carry equipment as necessary
