This position works under the direct supervision of the Sawmill Production Supervisor. As the Sawmill Utility Operator, you will operate, monitor, and control automated lumbermill equipment to saw timber logs into rough lumber; saw, trim, and plane rough lumber into dressed lumber of various sizes.
1) Operate front-end loaders, stationary deck cranes, forklifts, & log loaders to feed logs into the sawmill
2) Examine logs and rough timber to determine size, condition, quality and other characteristics to decide best lumber cuts
3) Partner with maintenance in troubleshooting process and equipment issues; and ensure necessary work is performed in a safe and effective manner.
4) Start conveyor system to move logs and lumber to and from saws.
5) Set up and adjust saw equipment and replace blades or bands using wrenches, gauges and other hand tools.
6) Operate equipment to sort and stack lumber, move stacks to storage areas or drying kilns, and feed lumber through planers.
7) Monitor movement of lumber to ensure cuts are made according to specifications.
9) Represent the Company in an ethical and proper manner.
10) Perform all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision by consistently showing ability to recognize and deal with priorities.
11) Recognize and perform duties which need to be completed although not directly assigned.
12) Work well, and maintain cooperative working relationships, with the managers, employees, vendors, suppliers, and customers

Work is performed in an outdoor and mill environment which could include exposure to extreme temperatures (hot/cold) as well as exposure to dust and wood shavings. May be subject to noise associated with heavy equipment and machinery, frequent interruptions, and varied workloads. Use of personal protective equipment is required. Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended. Ability to cope and deal effectively with multiple responsibilities at once and work in a busy environment, remain calm in emergencies, work collaboratively with others, and assist and/or train others as needed. This job position may require working long hours and weekends, where operations need maintained or emergencies require response. This position is considered moderately stressful on an occasional basis.

Body Movement: Frequent walking, reaching, turning head and torso, bending and flexing legs, arms, wrists, and fingers, grasping, bending torso, stooping, crouching and moving around areas needed for operations. Must be able to move throughout the facilities, travel to other offices and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Body Senses: Must be able to hear, see and speak well enough to safely perform the duties of the position and to effectively interact with others. The sense of touch in fingers and hands and the ability to smell is needed in order to safely perform work with the heavy equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Must possess normal balance and coordination adequate to work with heavy equipment. Ability to effectively and safely manipulate/set-up/use equipment, machinery and vehicles. Must be able to perform other tasks as trained safely and appropriately, within required flexibility, range of motion, coordination of body parts, and ability to transition between positions. Must have excellent hand/foot/eye coordination.
