A Snapshot of Your Day
The R&D Electrical Designer will work with the Research & Development team to design oil-insulated, freestanding inductive Current, Voltage, and Combi transformers ranging from 72.5 kV to 765 kV. These transformers are used for metering, protection, and control of high-voltage systems. The successful candidate will standardize existing designs and develop innovative engineering solutions to ensure best-in-class product performance, reliability, efficiency, and customer experience. This role involves close collaboration with customers, internal stakeholders and suppliers to develop and implement technical solutions that ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
Your Tasks:
- Perform electrical design of transformers, including core, primary, and secondary winding design; bushing design; and accuracy calculations in accordance with customer specifications and rule books.
- Ensure that products meet customer specifications and the requirements of international and Canadian standards.
- Standardize designs, develop and improve internal calculation procedures and tools, update material specifications, and modify product designs to ensure 100% First Pass Yield.
- Prepare inspection and test plans, as well as routine and type test programs, in accordance with applicable standards and customer specifications.
- Contribute to root cause analyses of electrical failures during Factory Acceptance Tests and in service and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
- Support the supplier process and product qualification process by providing material specifications, reviewing and approving supplier drawings to ensure compliance with technical requirements, providing inspection and test instructions, reviewing performance test results, and evaluating supplier deviation requests.
- Collaborate and network across Trench’s global group of companies in areas of responsibility such as calculation procedures, processes, lessons learned, and best practices.
- Plan, execute, and supervise assigned activities, and report to the Engineering and R&D Manager.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Applied Physics, or a comparable specialization.
- At least 5 years of professional experience and expertise in the electrical design of medium- or high-voltage products, such as power/distribution transformers, instrument transformers, switchgear, or high-voltage equipment/system design with measurement and protection applications. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will also be considered.
- Experience in the commissioning and/or operation and maintenance of the above-mentioned equipment is an asset.
- Proficient in interpreting and applying relevant international and local standards governing the design and installation of electrical components in North America (including ANSI, IEEE, IEC, CSA).
- Knowledge of international standards for instrument transformers is an asset.
- Ability to focus on detailed work and manage multiple tasks in parallel while maintaining high quality standards and meeting project deadlines.
