Summary

The Sr. Radiation Protection Technician performs a wide range of radiological protection activities such as radiological surveys, sampling and analysis, radioactive material control, contamination control, and dose control to ensure the health and safety of the general public and employees from hazards of radiation and to ensure compliance with regulations, standards and procedures.

May perform leadership responsibilities during refueling outages or supervisor absences.


Minimum Requirements

A two-year Associates degree in Radiation Protection-related coursework from an accredited college plus two (2) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions.

OR, High school diploma/GED plus three (3) years of experience in Radiation Protection positions or 6,000 hours of working experience in Radiation Protection (in accordance with NISP-RP-012), of which one (1) year should be Radiation Protection technical training. OR, a Radiation Protection certificate from an accredited college plus two (2) years of working experience in Radiation Protection positions. (Meets or exceeds minimum education and experience requirements per Palo Verde Procedure 01DP-0EM08, Appendix A.)

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

Knowledge of radiological fundamentals, mathematical concepts and plant systems.

Ability to analyze and interpret data.

Qualified in INPOs Common Industry Radiation Protection tasks. National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification.

Nuclear requirement:

Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member. Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVNGS.


Major Accountabilities

Performs Medium and High Radiological Risk work activities to ensure the highest level of radiological safety is provided during online and outage work activities.

Performs complex job coverage for tasks such as lead technician for steam generator jumping, diving activities and containment entries inside the pump bay bioshield at power.
Performs duties associated with Radioactive Material Shipments, Radiological Effluent Monitoring and Dosimetry Program implementation.
Implements Palo Verde administrative procedures to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations, and with Palo Verde procedures and policies.
Performs radiological surveys, provides accurate documentation, and establishes necessary radiological postings as required to maintain positive control for work activities being conducted within Radiologically Controlled Areas (RCA).
Conducts radiological surveys necessary for unrestricted release of materials, equipment and personnel.
Performs personnel decontamination activities.
Maintains positive controls of radiological material, wastes and source inventories, and personnel access into RCA.
Performs evaluation and analysis to determine necessary actions required to improve programmatic aspects necessary to maintain occupational exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
Responsibilities include writing work orders, scheduling work and preparing Radiation Exposure Permits (REPS).
Participates and progresses through an accredited Radiation Protection Technicians training program by successfully completing assigned task qualifications.
Inspects, calibrates and maintains radiological protection instrumentation, dosimetry and sampling equipment.
Performs activities associated with on-site and public protection during emergency plan execution.
Develops, conducts and evaluates trainees as assigned to ensure operating experience and program knowledge is shared to the maximum extent possible within Palo Verdes Accredited Radiation Protection Technicians Training Program.
Provides technical expertise during execution of assessments, industry benchmarking and procedure enhancements.
Performs assigned leadership duties temporarily during refueling outages or during supervisor absences.

Plant/Field Role:

This position requires work to be performed in the field and/or at the work site, due to the nature of work.

Any PVGS employees may be called upon for random Fitness for Duty (FFD) testing during scheduled working hours. Employees, if off-site, must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
