The Project Engineer
role will own the technical design, project execution, and customer deliverables for product lines focused on floating roof rim seals (primary/secondary, shoe, wiper/compression) and internal floating roofs (IFRs) and accessories for above-ground storage tanks. You’ll translate specifications into manufacturable designs, lead cross-functional project delivery from kickoff to commissioning and ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and emissions regulations.
What You’ll Do Design & Engineering
- Develop engineering designs and calculations for rim seals, IFRs, and related accessories (e.g., gauge pole well seals, fabric covers, wax scrapers, anti-rotation devices).
- Produce and review GA drawings, detailed fabrication drawings, BOM/MRLs, and installation procedures.
- Select materials (elastomers, fabrics, foams, metals) based on chemical compatibility, temperature, vapor pressure, and service conditions.
- Perform fit-for-purpose assessments with in-house programs (rim space reports, shell out-of-roundness evaluations, nozzle interferences) and propose design adaptations to suite.
- Serve as the project’s single-point technical contact from proposal through closeout.
- Build and maintain the project plan and schedule through the EMP (Order management system), tracking key deliverables through the system, communicating key updates to project stakeholders.
- Communicate schedule and design updates with internal Project Managers and in project ordering system.
- Ensure designs and deliverables align with applicable tank standards (e.g., API 650 tank standards and relevant codes requirements), while also considering client specs and local regulations.
- Participate in the quality efforts to identify, address, and resolve NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports)
- Capture lessons learned; standardize templates, drawing details, and calculators.
- Partner with Product and Drafting Automation to expand parametric models and standard part libraries.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor/SolidWorks) and creating fabrication-ready drawings/BOMs.
- Demonstrated project management skills: scheduling, cost tracking, risk/change management.
- Working knowledge of tank service conditions, materials compatibility, and emissions control concepts.
- Strong communication with customers, fabricators, and field teams; clear technical writing.
- Familiarity with API tank standards and floating roof practices; understanding of emissions-related regulatory requirements for storage vessels.
- Experience reading tank drawings, inspection reports and translating into design actions.
- Exposure to FEA for simple brackets/clip designs and tolerance stacks (nice to have).
- Hands-on experience with floating roof/IFR seals or closely related tank internals/mechanical assemblies.
- 2+ years engineering/project experience in terminals, refining, petrochemical, or storage tank equipment.Success Metrics (What “Great” Looks Like)- On-time delivery of engineering and site packages (>95% milestones met).
- Cost performance within ±5% of project baseline; positive change-order capture.
Quality: zero repeat NCRs; <2% drawing reissue rate post-release.- Standardization: contribution to design calculators, templates, or automation libraries. Work Environment & Physical Requirements- Office/hybrid with periodic shop and site visits (tanks/terminals).
- Ability to climb fixed ladders and navigate tank roofs when properly permitted and escorted, and to use standard PPE.
- Competitive base salary with project bonus eligibility.
- Health, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, and professional development support.
