Job Summary:
Cognascents is seeking a motivated Entry-Level Chemical/Process Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role will provide technical support for projects and serve as a scribe for critical process safety activities, including Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Safe Operating Limit (SOL) calculations, alarm rationalization, and Process Safety Management (PSM) program development. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and passionate about ensuring safety and operational excellence in the oil, gas, petrochemical, and specialty chemicals industries.
Key Responsibilities:
•Technical Support: Assist in the execution of process engineering and process safety projects, including data analysis, process simulations, and technical documentation. Support senior engineers in tasks such as pressure relief system design, flare header analysis, and process optimization.
•Scribe Duties: Document discussions, findings, and recommendations during Process Hazard Analyses (HAZOP, LOPA, What-if, FMEA, HAZID), alarm rationalization meetings, and PSM program development sessions. Ensure accurate and thorough documentation using MS Office and PHA software.
•Safe Operating Limit (SOL) Calculations: Support the calculation and validation of safe operating limits to ensure processes operate within safe boundaries.
•Alarm Rationalization: Assist in facilitating alarm rationalization meetings, collaborating with operations and engineering teams to optimize alarm systems for safety and efficiency.
•Process Safety Management (PSM): Contribute to the development, implementation, and maintenance of PSM programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and other relevant regulations.
•Technical Documentation: Read and interpret Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment datasheets, Cause and Effect charts, and other technical drawings. Prepare and update process safety information (PSI) and other critical documentation.
•Safety Compliance: Adhere to Cognascents’ and client safety procedures, maintaining a strong commitment to safety in all activities.
•Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and client stakeholders to deliver high-quality, client-focused solutions.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution (ABET-accredited program preferred).
•0-2 years of relevant experience in process engineering or process safety (internships or co-op experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, or chemical industries is a plus).
•Familiarity with process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen Plus®, HYSYS, Symmetry, Pro/II) and relief system design is preferred but not required.
•Strong technical writing and documentation skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
•Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, such as P&IDs and Cause and Effect charts.
•Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
•Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with team members and clients.
•Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time, as project needs require.
