POSITION SUMMARY:
The Garyville Refinery is in search of a highly motivated Refining Process Engineer to support our strategic effort to ensure mechanical integrity and reliability of our world-class assets. Technical Services Corrosion Team members drive continuous improvements relating to process and utility system corrosion issues while striving to understand, anticipate, and plan for potential corrosion related damage. This position reports to a Process Optimization & Growth Manager.
This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
KEY
RESPONSIBILITIES:* Manage adherence to Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs) for the area operating teams. Drive improvements and changes to the IOW program through consultation with Operations, Reliability, Fixed Equipment Mechanical Integrity (FEMI), & Area Team Process Engineers (ATPEs).
•Support FEMI with improvements and changes to Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs) and Corrosion Material Diagrams (CMDs).
•Drive process studies and sample station additions/improvements to proactively monitor for process and utility system driven corrosion.
•Manage and coordinate analytical lab sampling efforts to help identify how process deviations affect corrosion mechanisms within the process and utility systems.
•Identify effective changes to process or utility system conditions necessary to combat corrosion.
•Develop projects for metallurgical upgrades to assets when changing process or utility system conditions to combat corrosion are not feasible.
•Assist the Reliability and FEMI Groups with asset end-of-life planning to include the impact of process changes on asset life, process improvements, and materials selection.
•Collaborate with ATPEs to manage chemical treatment programs at the refinery that are intended to slow or stop corrosion. This includes managing chemical applications, effectiveness, return on investment, and process improvements.
•Act as a key member of the New Crude Approval Process. Participates in pre-screens, hazard reviews, and coordinates any additional inspection tasks through the FEMI Group.
•Participate in the review of all proposed projects (any size) at the refinery that have an impact on the process or utility systems.
•Applies their strong understanding of refinery processes in connection with asset deterioration and corrosion to lead multi-disciplinary work groups to resolve corrosion related issues that span the refinery (e.g., crude overhead corrosion, carbonic acid corrosion, and amine corrosion.).
•Core member of the Process Hazardous Analysis (PHA) effort for revalidations and capital projects. Responsible for PHA Materials Assessment Checklists for PHAs.
•Partner with FEMI to employ failure analysis techniques such as surface deposit composition and metallography analyses to characterize and develop strategies to proactively manage corrosion.
•Utilize process simulation tools (e.g., Petro-SIM, OLI, & HTRI) to gain a better understanding of process conditions that could be affecting corrosion rates.
•Participate in incident investigations that are process and utility corrosion related.
•Participate in corporate advisory groups (Process Technologies, Corrosion & Materials, Fixed Equipment Reliability, Reliability, and Fixed Equipment Reliability Engineering) as needed to drive continuous improvement.
•Proactively participate in the inspection discovery phase of outages and turnarounds to better understand potential corrosion causes, recommend process changes on start-up, and drive improvements and/or changes through the area operating teams.
•Support the development of corrosion driven inspection plans for outages and turnarounds.
•Leverage industry resources such as Materials Technology Institute (MTI) and the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) to address site challenges.
•Leverage MPC Technologists, SMEs, and standards (internal & external) to address site corrosion challenges.
•Support the development of processes and procedures for planning, executing, and continually improving our ability to manage corrosion threats for existing and future assets.
•Some travel for training and professional development will be required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:* Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university required.
•Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience as a process engineer in an oil refinery preferred.
•A valid drivers license is required.
•Excellent communication, time management and interpersonal skills.
•The successful candidate will be proficient in the following competencies: Technical Professional Knowledge & Skills, Critical Thinking, Drive for Results, Managing Priorities, Adaptability, and Innovation.
