What You'll Do
•Stay Ahead: Keep up to date with NERC and NPCC protection and control standards.
•Innovate: Engineer protective relay and control systems, calculate relay settings, create relay control logic, and analyze relay operations for transmission/distribution substations.
•Communicate: Apply your knowledge of relay communications theory, testing practices, and maintain relay communications network infrastructure.
•Simulate: Model primary and secondary systems in power system simulation software platforms like CAPE or ASPEN.
•Automate: Utilize your experience with IEC 61850 substation automation architecture, logic, and protocols.
•Specify: Prepare specifications for purchasing protection, communication equipment, and instrument transformers, and evaluate bid proposals to provide technical recommendations.
•Analyze: Perform system disturbance analysis and recommend protective relaying system modifications and/or additions.
•Review: Ensure proper relay coordination margin by reviewing existing protective relay settings and recommending changes if required. Document and recommend protection system improvements.
•Collaborate: Interface with manufacturers, professional organizations, regulatory and standardizing bodies (e.g., NPCC, IEEE) to stay conversant with power system protection and control requirements.
•Develop: Utilize communication systems including power line carrier, leased telephone circuits, microwave links, and fiber optic technology to develop protective relaying systems.
•Monitor: Use state-of-the-art microprocessor-based digital transient recorders and integrated sequence-of-event recorders in complex monitoring and logging systems for system performance analysis.
•Calculate: Perform special short circuit studies and other complex calculations to establish relay settings using sophisticated software analysis programs.
Required Qualifications
•P&C substation engineer with at least ten years of experience.
•Senior level electrical engineer with the ability to interact with clients to accurately interpret technical requirements based on the information provided.
•Must have experience with protective relaying system modifications and/or additions.
