Open Energy Solutions Inc. (OES) is an early-stage services and software development company that is enabling utilities and utility vendors to enhance power system operations through the development and implementation of distributed intelligence and enabling technologies.
Role:
OES is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer who will provide relevant skills, experience, and expertise in a utility environment associated with operational technology projects. OES' primary functions are around technology solution development and utility consulting services, and this individual would play an instrumental part of the team (including but not limited to IT/communication specialists, developers, electricians, project managers, etc.) providing technical expertise and industry acumen.
This role sits at the intersection of research and practical field application, offering a rare opportunity to be a valuable contributor in cutting-edge power systems work deployed in real utility environments. In the role, the candidate is expected to wear several hats: technical solution designer, client subject matter advisor, power systems analysis, and modeling/simulation engineer. This can be a high-paced, dynamic environment, so the individual must be responsive, creative, and proficient with respect to individual projects and the job in general.
Note: OES is willing to provide visa sponsorship and green card support for exceptional candidates who are already US-based.
Responsibilities for this position but are not limited to the following:•Design, develop, and test various operational technology solutions (PoC, MVP, and/or Commercialized)
•Develop, configure and parametrize simulation models representing distribution feeders including microgrids and DER inverters
•Perform power system transient studies, and detailed equipment modeling using software tools
•Model distribution feeders, equipment wiring, and fault analysis
•Provide technical support for Hardware-in-loop (HIL) and other types of simulations
•Provide a variety of consulting/advisory services for other requests both internally for team members and externally for client projects
•Clearly communicate results to internal stakeholders by preparing detailed written reports/presentations describing analyses performed and proposed solutions developed
Foundational, Required Skills:
•Education: PhD in Power Systems Engineering. MS candidate would be considered, but only if with exceptional experience(s).
•Experience: Must have industry experience. Practical experience (e.g., Utility, Software, Consulting) will be prioritized over theoretical (e.g., Postdocs, National Labs).
•Development: Strong Programming Skills required. Must be proficient in one or more languages (e.g., Python). Again, real-world applications will be prioritized over academic.
•Literacy, Fluency: English

•Eager to leverage AI tools in their own role to enhance productivity and innovation in power systems engineering
Desired/Optional Power Systems Capabilities:
•Provide the team with applied knowledge and experience of electrical modeling formats and schemas (CIM 100, DSS, CYME) as well as conversion tools
•Demonstrate strong conceptual understanding of IEEE 1547 and related standards
•Strong understanding of distribution management system and DER integration use cases
•Previous experience with software development lifecycle, especially as it pertains to power systems
•Familiar with software simulation applications such as OpenDSS and/or GridLab-D
•Provides functional expertise and technical support for algorithmic design of distribution optimization techniques such as CVR, VVO, FLISR etc.
•Familiar with Hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulations; experience with Typhoon HIL and/or RTDS will be highly considered
•Previous experience performing microgrid protection and control
•Experience with communication protocols like GOOSE, DNP3, MODBUS is a plus
