Position Description

The Power System Engineer works under the limited supervision of the Senior Director of SCADA.

Power Systems Engineers play a crucial role in the electrical engineering industry, focusing on generating, transmitting, distributing, and utilizing electric power. These professionals ensure that power systems are efficient and meet the required safety standards and regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical engineering, expertise in power system modeling, and experience with industry-standard software tools.


Primary Responsibilities

Power Systems Engineers are responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at creating and maintaining efficient power systems. The day-to-day tasks of a Power Systems Engineer may vary depending on the specific industry and project requirements. These responsibilities and typical tasks include:

Designing and analyzing power systems to ensure stability and reliability.

Conduct interconnection studies to evaluate the impact of new generation projects on the power grid, including feasibility, system impact, and facility studies.
Analyze and interpret study results to provide actionable recommendations for grid interconnection and system upgrades.
Collaborate with internal teams, utilities, independent system operators (ISOs), and regulatory bodies to facilitate interconnection approvals.
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for stakeholders, including utilities, clients, and regulatory agencies.
Participate in project planning, scheduling, and budgeting to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of engineering studies.
Conducting research and implementing new methodologies to enhance power generation and distribution processes.
Simulating system performance under different operating conditions to predict the occurrence of potential problems.
Ensuring that all electrical systems comply with current regulations and safety standards.
Collaborating with other engineers and professionals on projects that involve electrical power systems.
Preparing technical documentation, such as system drawings, specifications, operational guidelines, test procedures, test reports, and compliance reports.
Assessing the load requirements of different systems and determining the power supply capacities for existing and future demands.
Conducting system tests and inspections to ensure operational effectiveness and safety.
Developing project cost estimates and timelines.
Design and develop complex electrical systems and electronic components, and products.



Qualifications & Requirements

A Professional Engineer (PE) license, which adds a credential that is highly respected within the industry and is often required for higher-level positions is required.
Experience working with utilities, ISOs, and renewable energy developers is required.
A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Master's or PhD preferred.
Relevant certifications, such as those offered by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) that demonstrate a commitment to continuing education and specialization in power systems engineering.
Experience defining power flow and loss calculations across transformers and transmission lines shared between multiple resources.
Knowledge and experience with the integration of inverter-based resources (IBR) such as solar, wind, and ESS to the transmission and distribution system.
Familiarity with microgrids and their integration/ coordination with substation relays, protection schemes, and critical load management.
Experience with defining and configuring substation protection relay settings.
Knowledge and experience with developing load flow and interconnection studies of power systems with ETAP or equivalent software.
Knowledge and experience with performing FAT testing of the power system using HIL and real-time simulators.
Knowledge and experience of developing dynamic power system modeling using PSLF, PSS/E, and PSCAD software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder engagement.
Familiarity with grid codes, interconnection standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NERC, IEEE, FERC).
Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation and data analysis is highly desirable.
Experience in programming and configuration of SEL RTAC and SEL 351/ 487 relays.
Proficient experience with SEL equipment and ability to review and interpret DFR logs

for fault analysis and disturbances.

Experience serving in an Independent Engineer (IE) role for an EPC/ IPP/ developer owner.
Knowledge and experience installing and maintaining high-voltage equipment, including transformers, switchgear, and circuit breakers.



Physical, Mental & Emotional Requirements

Employees may be required to sit for long periods of time using a keyboard and monitor display, travel to local locations, lift up to 20lbs, and push/pull up to 20lbs. Must be able to organize and prioritize work in accordance with deadlines, adapt behavior and work methods in response to changing conditions or challenges. Employees will be involved with sustained activity required for analysis, reasoning, and problem solving. Must be able to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships, recognize emotionally charged issues and respond appropriately, act with professionalism, and work both independently and collaboratively. Must be able to develop effective working relationships with all levels of the organization and outside partners.


Work Environment

The employee will primarily work in a climate-controlled office with occasional fluctuations in temperature. The employee will work at an assigned desk under artificial lighting. The employee may occasionally attend meetings and/or training outside of their assigned workstation.
