In Canada, in addition to our oil sands business, CNOOC International is a 50% partner and operator of a natural gas fired combined cycle power station located in Balzac, Alberta. The Balzac Power Station generates 120 megawatts of power for the Alberta electricity grid.

In this role, your work schedule will be day and night rotating shifts that will average out to 37 and 1/3 hours per week on an annual basis. Please note that you may be required to work overtime dependent on business or safety needs.

Bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and the determination to fuel our success are what set us apart. Therefore, we are seeking a Plant Operator to join our growing team in Balzac, Alberta. This dynamic role will be instrumental in driving the safety of our day-to-day operations and the overall performance of our facility.
This position is for a Plant Operator / Power Engineer at the Balzac Power Station, located 10 minutes north of Calgary. The Power Plant is a 120MW Combined Cycle Facility comprised of 2 GE LM 6000 Gas Turbines and a 25MW Dresser Rand Condensing Steam Turbine. The Plant is operated by one Control Room Operator and one Assistant Operator, who both report to the Plant Manager. The successful candidate will be required to work 12 hour rotating shifts, both days and nights. Flexibility of the schedule is required and this may include relief scheduling.
This position is classified as a Safety-Sensitive position.
- Operating the plant equipment in a safe, efficient, and effective manner;
- Reporting any environment, safety, or reliability related deficiencies to the Control Room Operator or Plant Manager;
- Understanding and complying with CNOOC International Policies and Procedures, both corporate and site specific;
- Training to the Control Room Operator competency level and providing coverage if this position is vacant;
- Complete an log book entry each shift and conduct a detailed hand over to the incoming operator;
- Manage abnormal situation by initiating a controlled hierarchy or stabilize/slowdown/shutdown;
- Operating high pressure equipment and auxiliaries;
- An Inter-Provincial Second Class Power Engineering Certificate OR Third Class Power Engineering Certificate with significant progress towards achieving the Second Class Certificate;
- A two year Power Engineering Technology Diploma would be a definite asset;
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in a large industrial plant setting;
- An understanding of High Voltage Switch Gear and Power Generation Equipment is essential;
- Control Room operating experience is highly desired;
- Combined cycle/gas turbine and high voltage switching experience are also highly desired;
- Demonstrate decision making, communication and problem-solving skills;
- Dependable, self-motivated, results driven and a strong team player;
- SAP knowledge will be considered an asset;
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and clean abstract;
