Operators

The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (P.V.S.C.), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently accepting applications for experienced Operators. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.5 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd.

Position Summary: Assists in the operation and maintenance of the collection system.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required. Satisfactory completion of both the Basic and Advanced Wastewater Treatment course is preferred.

Requirements:Must have knowledge of the principles and methods used in the treatment and disposal of wastewater and biosolids, as well as understand and comprehend the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the treatment and disposal of wastewater and biosolids. Must be knowledgeable in the occupational hazards and the safety precautions involved in the conveyance of wastewater, as well as demonstrate the ability to learn and retain technical information. Mechanical and/or problem solving aptitude, as well as computer literacy, is required. Must be able to read, write, communicate and understand English sufficiently to perform the functions of this position. Must be able to understand and execute oral and written directions.

Experience, Licenses and Certifications: Valid New Jersey Driver's License is preferred but not required.

Operator I - Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in wastewater treatment and a New Jersey Treatment Plant S2 license.

Operator II - Minimum six (6) years’ experience in wastewater treatment and a New Jersey Treatment Plant S1 license.

Operator III - Minimum five (5) years’ experience in wastewater treatment and a New Jersey Treatment Plant S1 license.

Working Conditions:Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.
