What is EMOC?

The Energy Management Operations Centre (EMOC) team is a dynamic and diverse group that is collaborative, passionate about learning, and wants to drive change. EMOC’s Control Room Operators are critical in managing the day-to-day operations of the team and offering exceptional services for our customers. In addition, they have opportunities to leverage their talents and work on a diverse set of projects that allow them to develop their skills and contribute to their long-term career goals.

EMOC is accountable for real-time operations support for thermal, solar, and wind generating capacity in Canada and the United States. EMOC’s real-time services includes effective coordination of information amongst plant operators, balancing authorities, grid operators, transmission operators, and customers; monitoring of remote renewable assets; market rule compliance management; operational analytics; and remote operation of renewable and gas assets.

As the Control Room Operator, you will contribute to our team by

- Monitoring asset generation, alarms, dispatch, and offers.

- In real-time, managing asset dispatch, economic offers, testing submissions, outage scheduling, and stakeholder communication with corporate policies, EMOC procedures, commercial agreements, market rules, and NERC standards.

- Responding to facility onsite staff, trader, balancing authority and transmission operator directions and directives as required, and in line with EMOC procedures and market rules.

- Operating remote assets with minimal guidance or assistance.

- Operating circuit breakers as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation.

- Assisting with outage planning and scheduling of work.

- Identifying opportunities to improve asset performance and acting to improve performance of Capital Power’s renewable fleet.

- Developing standard operating procedures (SOP’s).

- Proactively identifying and executing opportunities to improve control room systems, tools, processes, procedures, or EMOC services that will create value or improve effectiveness for Capital Power or EMOC.

- Supporting the integration of new assets into control room operations and expansion of EMOC services, as required.

- Assisting with maintaining safety and environmental monitoring equipment compliant to the regulatory requirements.

- Working in a way that minimizes the risk of contravention with market rules, NERC, operational, legislated standards, or policies.

- Handling and troubleshooting system issues in real-time to avoid safety, operational, compliance, or contractual contraventions.

- Supporting IT and others in EMOC to integrate new systems, tools, procedures, system upgrades, or assets into control room operations through testing, development of training material, and updating processes and procedures.

- Assisting in identifying and performing the root cause of system failures.

What you will bring to the role


Education:

- Engineering Technologist (CET), or similar discipline. Education equivalency may be considered.

- Power Engineering certification would be seen as an asset.


Experience:

- 5+ years of related Operations experience.

- Strong understanding of market rules, procedures and protocols, systems, and real-time operation of generating assets.

- Experience operating simple cycle power generating facility equipment with minimal guidance or assistance.


Technical Skills:

- Demonstrates knowledge of all parts of the power plant operations.

- Able to make competent decisions in case an emergency should occur.

- Ability to assume accountability, prioritize, and respond to several tasks under stressful conditions.

- Capable of writing technical procedures, work requests and written records.

- Proven problem solving and analytical reasoning skills with impeccable attention-to-detail.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

- Adequate knowledge in the use of Microsoft office and Excel.

- Ability to read at the level of understanding written safety procedures, P&IDs, blueprints, technical instruction manuals, and other written records.

- Demonstrates the ability to interpret mechanical drawings, logic drawings, and piping and instrument drawings.

- Knowledge of machine learning and programming experience (R, MATLAB, Python, SQL, Visual Basic) considered an asset.


Working Conditions:

- Control Room/office setting.

- The role requires working 12- hour rotating work shifts to maintain 24/7 coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

- Required to respond quickly to plant conditions or requirements, which may involve extended and/or abnormal work hours including call-ins.

- The rotating shift schedule is released in advance and has flexibility to work around vacations and other commitments throughout the year.


Additional Details

As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a pre-employment drug & alcohol test is required.

In order to be considered for this role you must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

This role requires the ability to travel to the United States for short-term training purposes. A valid passport and eligibility to enter the U.S. under business visitor status is required.

The successful candidate for this position will undergo an education verification, reference checks and criminal record check.
