Position Title: Operator

Essential Functions:

The Operators primary duty is to assist line crew or network crew members by working on the ground, handing tools and heavy materials to workers. To dig holes and pad ditches, and to perform other similar work in connection with the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground power lines. This position is the highest of a multi-step progression and is expected to know all aspects of Operator duties for the Company. Lower steps in this classification are expected to progress into all aspects of these duties. Operators are never permitted to work on energized conductors without direct/immediate supervision at all times. An Operator is also responsible for his/her own safety at all times and is expected to learn and follow all company guidelines and safety procedures. It is the responsibility of the operator to report any and all accidents to the foreman immediately and ensure the safety of his fellow crew members by following all safety guidelines.
Roles and Responsibilities:
•Passes tools to line crew or network crew members by acting as a general helper on the ground. Handles cables, conduit and other materials as directed. Glues conduits together. Assists in setting transformers.
•Assists line crew with setting poles by shoveling or piking; fills anchor holes. Use of heavy equipment, digger derricks, backhoes, skid steers, or bucket trucks are also a necessity
•Clears undergrowth from right-of-way by using hand tools or saws. Piles debris to clear path. Performs general clean-up of job sites following completion of work.
•Positions reels of electric cable beside trenches and lays heavy residential underground distribution (URD) cables in ditches and pads by shoveling fine sand around cable.
•Assists network crew top man with lowering and raising molten metals and other heavy materials to the cable splicer working below in the vault.
•Operates roto hammer to access vaults.
•Notifies customers of impending disruption of service while lines are under repair.
•Flags traffic to protect employees and the public from injury.
•May assist linemen as directed, operating jackhammer or digging bars to break concrete or rocks. May drive 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup truck to job site or to obtain supplies.
•Performs other duties as assigned. Job duties are subject to change as directed by management.
Success Factors:
•Must be able to work outdoors in diverse terrain and in all weather conditions
•Physical capabilities required to safely operate a motor vehicle and equipment, in all driving conditions.
•Possesses sight, strength and coordination necessary to safely and effectively operate heavy and light equipment and tools.
•Duties entail full-body exertion, strenuous lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.
•Must have ability for frequent travel on needed training requirements and potential for overtime including storm work.
Experience and Education:
•High School Diploma or equivalent
•1 Year of Prior Equipment operating experience In a related field.
•Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:
•Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver License is required.
•Must obtain a Class A CDL with Medical Examiner’s Card
•Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
•Complete OSHA 10hr Safety Training Program within 60 days.
•Successful completion of appropriate knowledge and skills examinations.
•Compliance with Safety Performance Standards.
•May be Employee Performance Tested to a higher level with testing and verifiable experience.
•Completion of Critical review and recommendations from Operations, Safety/Training.
•Must have ability for frequent travel on needed training requirements and potential for overtime including storm work.
