We’re looking for a OLTC Transformer Technician with hands-on experience in transformer testing and a strong background in On Load Tap Changer (OLTC) diagnostics and maintenance. You will need to indicate the makes and models that you have experience working on. In this field-based role, you’ll support mission-critical power projects across the U.S., performing and documenting complex electrical testing, troubleshooting, and OLTC-related services on a wide range of OEM transformers. You’ll work independently or alongside a crew to ensure the reliability, safety, and performance of high-voltage equipment for utility and industrial customers.
- Perform transformer testing and troubleshooting, including Megger, TTR, SFRA, Power Factor, Core Ground, and winding resistance
- Conduct passivation testing and verify the proper function of transformer accessories
- Test alarm functions and protective systems within transformers
- Troubleshoot and repair control wiring issues
- Follow and apply OEM, utility, and customer testing specifications
- Document all test results and generate detailed customer reports
- Perform oil sampling, degassing, processing, and preparation for disposal as needed
- Operate industrial and construction equipment safely and effectively
- Maintain and inspect tools, vehicles, and test equipment
- Adhere to all company safety, environmental, and PPE protocols (including spill containment and arc flash standards)
- Disassemble, inspect, service, and reassemble OLTC components, including tap selectors, diverter switches, and resistor/counter assemblies
- Troubleshoot and resolve OLTC issues such as abnormal contact wear, carbon buildup, oil contamination, and mechanical misalignment
- Perform OLTC timing and resistance testing using DLRO, Megger, and Ductor equipment
- Interpret DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) for OLTC arcing and fault diagnostics
- Independently inspect, drain, filter, and refill OLTC compartments safely and to spec
- Read and interpret OLTC control wiring diagrams, logic, and control cabinet schematics
- Use precision tools such as calipers, micrometers, pressure gauges, and feeler gauges
- Provide accurate documentation and work with the transformer team for OLTC condition reporting
- 5–10 years of experience in transformer testing, field services, and OLTC work
- In-depth understanding of OLTC designs and maintenance procedures across multiple OEM platforms (e.g., MR, ABB, GE)
- Experience with transformer oil work, degassing units, and oil processing equipment
- Proficiency with test sets including DLRO, Megger, SFRA, TTR, Excitation, and Power Factor units
- Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and scopes of work
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and digital reporting platforms
- Comfortable working in the field in varied weather, elevated positions, and around energized equipment
- Strong safety mindset and ability to follow OSHA, NFPA 70E, and site-specific protocols
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Willingness to travel up to 80% across the continental U.S.
- Ability to pass a DOT physical exam, background check, and drug/alcohol screening.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Availability for extended or irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Physical capability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights exceeding 100 feet, operate in confined spaces, and perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions.- Good vision, hearing, and English proficiency to ensure safe and effective communication in noisy environments.
- Extensive experience with Power Factor, SFRA, TTR, and other diagnostic tests
- Test software familiarity and reporting systems
- Previous leadership or mentorship in field testing crews
- OEM or utility-side testing documentation experience
- Holds a DOT medical certification.
- Class A CDL
- OSHA and TWIC certifications
