Structural Integrity Associates, Inc. (SI), an engineering consulting firm dedicated to the analysis and prevention of mechanical and structural failures for a variety of industries, is seeking a candidate for a Metallurgical Engineer, at a Consultant or Senior Consult level. The successful candidate will provide metallurgical and failure analysis services with a focus on the power industry, and provide occasional field support on high energy piping condition assessment projects. This position is based in SI’s Material Science Center in Austin, Texas, and requires a minimum B.S. degree in metallurgy or materials engineering and 10+ years of experience related to metallurgical failure analysis or condition assessment services. Project management experience, and detailed knowledge of destructive laboratory testing, metallography, and microscopy related to power generation and general industrial component failures is desired. Candidates should either have a PE license or have an identified path toward PE licensure. This is a laboratory-based position with potential for advancement to include management responsibilities. General duties for this position are as follows:

Review client needs related to failed or damaged metal components (tubing, pipes, pump and valve components, turbine components, mechanical devices, and various other industrial equipment components), and develop proposals for providing condition assessment or failure analysis service
Manage metallurgical laboratory projects through coordination of work scopes, interacting with lab technicians, reviewing and interpreting results, and preparing reports to provide findings and recommendation
Assist with and/or manage field projects for assessing service damage in power plants
Provide materials support to assist SI’s experienced teams of engineering staff that
+ Provide consulting services to nuclear, fossil, and renewable energy clients + Manage root cause analysis investigations + Provide asset management and condition assessment services

Ability to multi-task on different projects in a sometimes fast-paced environment
Willing to learn through experience and interaction with established industry experts


Required Skills/Qualifications:* 10-15 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering or related industry experience.

BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Highly motivated self-starter with a strong eagerness to learn and challenge historical practices.
Experience in power generation rotating machinery, including but not limited to gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, and plant auxiliaries.
Working knowledge of CAD software, Abaqus and/or ANSYS FE software, and general fracture mechanics and creep concepts.
Knowledge of common gas turbine and steam turbine alloys, failure mechanisms and properties.
Ability to be actively involved in both internal and external training and development programs.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in computer software, including Microsoft Office.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:* Background in life management of capital and critical assets or maintenance.

Background in rotor dynamics, balancing and torsional analysis.
Experience with SolidWorks.
Experience with computer programming.
Experience in consulting, sales, or application engineering.
PE license in one or more states.
