The Nuclear Fuels Engineering (NFE) department is seeking candidates who are passionate about nuclear energy’s role in a clean energy future. Duke’s NFE department is unique in the industry by owning and performing in-house methods and analysis for nearly all aspects of the fuel cycle, from contracting fuel supply to long term storage of spent fuel. Responsibilities

The Fuel Supply and Storage (FSS) team is responsible for providing technical support for the dry fuel storage and spent fuel management programs for Duke Energy’s existing and future nuclear fleet. FSS is also responsible for the procurement of all Duke Energy’s nuclear fuel requirements.


Group responsibilities and duties include:

Provide support for dry fuel storage activities in the fleet including resolution of technical issues, interface with site personnel during loading activities and evaluation of system and site design changes
Provide dry fuel storage system fabrication technical support including review of fabrication drawings, specs, procedures and nonconformances
Interface with dry storage system vendors for system and equipment
Qualify and select spent fuel to be stored in the various dry storage systems throughout the fleet
Participate in industry dry storage groups (such as NEI, EPRI, Orano and NAC)
Coordinate with dry storage program managers from the other nuclear stations to identify fleet and industry best practices and to facilitate consistent fleet implementation
Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the design, licensing and operation of the dry fuel storage systems in use throughout the Duke nuclear fleet
Perform TRACWORK Special Nuclear Material database updates and annual reports per NRC protocols


Basic / Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer I: This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of the FSS group with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence as they acquire increasing knowledge of fundamental concepts, processes, and procedures.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
0-2 years of engineering experience

Nuclear Engineer II: Employees at this level solve problems in engineering areas of the FSS group with variable supervision depending on the incumbent’s demonstrated proficiency with a given task and the task complexity and risks. Incumbents have developed the skills and ability to work with greater independence as they continue acquiring increasing knowledge of fuel performance concepts, processes, and procedures.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
2-4 years of engineering experience
Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience


Desired Qualifications

Nuclear, Civil, or Mechanical engineering degree
Knowledge of spent nuclear fuel storage systems
Internship working in the utility industry or nuclear related field
Computer skills – proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel at a minimum
Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization
Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills
Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities
Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments
Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license


Job Specific Requirements

Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
Occasional overnight travel.


Working Conditions

Hybrid office/remote work environment
Flexible work schedule - typically four 10-hour days, two days in office and two days remote
Some travel to other Duke sites, industry sites, and industry conferences/meetings
Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
Occasional off-hour emergent work required.
