Xcel Energy is seeking an experienced Industrial Engineering Technician to join our Communications Team. This role is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining communication infrastructure in the field, with a focus on fiber optics, copper cabling, and related network hardware. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hands-on technical work, be comfortable working onsite in diverse environments, and excel at resolving service tickets efficiently.
- Respond to and resolve field service tickets related to communications systems, including fiber, copper, and other cable types.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues, connectivity problems, and wiring faults.
- Perform rewiring, splicing, terminations, and installations as needed to restore or enhance communications service.
- Conduct on-site inspections and preventive maintenance of communication infrastructure.
- Collaborate with the Communications Engineering team to implement upgrades and resolve recurring issues.
- Maintain detailed service records, repair logs, and work order documentation.
- Adhere to all Xcel Energy safety standards, industry regulations, and technical specifications.
- Operate and maintain testing equipment to verify signal integrity and cable performance.
- Support emergency outage response and after-hours on-call work as required.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting, splicing, and terminating communication cables.
- Strong understanding of network infrastructure, cable routing, and industry standards.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
- Associate degree in Industrial Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, Electronics, or related field OR equivalent combination of education and field experience.
- Minimum of 2–4 years’ experience working with fiber optics, copper cabling, and communication systems.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work at heights, and perform physical tasks in various weather conditions.
- Certification in fiber optic installation/maintenance (e.g., FOA CFOT).
- Experience in utility or energy sector communications systems.
- Familiarity with SCADA or OT communication networks.
