We are looking for a mine planner to join our Central Division Corporate Geologic Services Team. This position will be based out of our Nashville, Tennessee office or our Grand Rivers, Kentucky, office, and will have responsibility for the development, implementation, and monitoring of mine plans at multiple surface mines across Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas. Responsibilities will also include providing technical analysis, advice, and mine engineering support to mining operations, Division Management, and Geological Services staff.

To be successful in this role, you must be good at developing and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships with your colleagues and with site management personnel. Mine plan design and scheduling experience is a must, with a minimum of 5-7 years preferred. The combination of short, mid, and long-range planning will all come into play. An ability to assess a situation, gather pertinent information, and formulate a plan will enable you to deliver a useful product to the operation. This role provides a great deal of freedom and responsibility. The need to keep track of your progress and schedule your time effectively is critical. While you will report to a supervisor, your day-to-day activities will revolve around your customers’ needs and will require your ability to prioritize and execute. Attention to detail is key when delivering a well-thought-out plan. You must take pride in producing quality work in a timely fashion. A strong, independent nature will provide the path to fulfilling the requirements of this role.


What You’ll Do:

Gather and Utilize Mine Planning Data. Gather and utilize geologic mapping, drill data, hydrologic information, quality testing results, topography, aerial photography, survey data, sales forecasts, and other mine planning data to design 3-D mine plans and mining/stripping schedules.

Analyze and Document Land Use Information. Gather, review, analyze, and document property lines, mining setbacks, easements, zoning, special use agreements, neighbor concerns, and other site-specific land use information as necessary for mine planning process.

Generate and Maintain Site Plans and Maps. Generate and maintain an updated life-of-mine site plan for all locations. Maintain aerial photos and topographic maps/site maps on the network server in an up-to-date and current status. Assist with reserve documentation.

Monitor Mine Development. Monitor long-term mine development and identify/advise on current and future mining challenges. Develop and communicate reserve estimates, short-term mine plans, long-term mine plans, and mine reclamation plans.

Ensure Compliance. Assist operations personnel in complying with permit conditions, laws, regulations, guidelines, and in maintaining the systems necessary for compliance.

Prepare Presentations. Assist in the preparation of presentations, documentations, reports, and maps as needed.

Prepare Stripping Plans. Estimate stripping volumes, prepare stripping plans and assist with preparation of stripping bid packages.

Participate in Zoning Efforts. Participate in zoning efforts, special projects, and property acquisitions as necessary.

Champion Continuous Improvement. Identify opportunities to increase efficiencies, maximize reserve recovery, reduce costs, minimize wastes, and reduce impacts to neighbors. Assist operations managers with efforts to lower operating costs.


Skills You’ll Need:

Education. Must have a Bachelor’s degree, B.Sc. in Mining Engineering is preferred, or in an associated technical field such as Geology, Geological Engineering, or Civil Engineering. PE/CPG preferred.

Experience. At least 5 years of geology, mining engineering, or operations experience is preferred.

Industry Knowledge. Must have knowledge of basic mining engineering and geologic concepts, as well as of the federal, state and local regulations, and statutes which affect mine planning.

Functional Knowledge. Basic surveying knowledge is preferred.

Mine Planning Skills. Must have the ability, either through formal training or experience, to create mine plans, compute stone reserves, and interpret data including geologic testing results, topographic maps and regulatory requirements,

Analytical Skills. Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Technology Skills. Must have proficient skills in 3D-CAD design, Excel, Carlson, and other computer related software.

Interpersonal Skills. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to successfully interact and build relationships with VMC personnel from a wide range of departments and levels of authority, as well as with representatives of government and regulatory agencies. Must be able to present complex information in a clear and concise manner. Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Time Management Skills. Must be self-motivated and have the ability to manage multiple projects effectively without close supervision.
