Performs routine clerical and skilled utility work in the reading and operation of utility meters; Reads water consumption meters and records volume used by residential and commercial consumers.
Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager.
Travels assigned routes and takes readings of meter dials; records reading and inputs data into hand-held microcomputing device to provide needed information for utility billing or other related action; notes any unusual changes in consumption, location or malfunctions such as leaks or damaged meters. Utilizes remote-reading equipment as necessary.
Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connection or use; reports findings to supervisor.
Rechecks readings as needed to determine abnormal consumption patterns and analyze possible causes for fluctuation or consumption.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of meters; replaces defective meters; tests meters for accuracy.
Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings of meter dials. Performs light maintenance on meter boxes.
Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections. Replaces old meters as needed.
Maintains regular maintenance schedule for truck; restocks truck supplies as required. Fills in for outside maintenance crew as needed.
Maintains radio communication with office and other crew members.
Checks water pressure on lines; checks for leaks.
Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department.
Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations. Turns service off for nonpayment of charges and/or on for new occupants or reconnections. Returns hand held meter reading devices to business office for billing purposes. Pulls, changes, and resets meters.
Maintains the landscape around the pump station and storage tank.
Communicates with customers regarding water problems and readings; reports same information to Office Manager or other personnel.
May operate a fork-lift, air compressor and saw.
Responds to work orders for utility disconnections, reconnections, new orders, and other public works service requests, as assigned.
(A) High school diploma or GED equivalent and
(B) Three (3) months of related experience or
(C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
(A) Working knowledge of data entry; working knowledge of basic arithmetic;
(B) Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
(C) Ability to perform and record arithmetic computations accurately and quickly;
Ability to accurately read and record data from various type of meter dials; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to work in inclement weather; Ability to establish successful working relationships; Ability to work with angry or difficult customers.
Must have a valid South Carolina Driver's License. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Charts, diagrams, entry books, file cabinets, pens, pencils, hand held computers for meter readings, hand tools, calculator, portable or mobile radio.
