The Opportunity
•Pillar: Materials and Major Components (MMC)
•Department: Forensic and Component Services (FCS)
•Location: 800 Kipling Avenue, Toronto – on site
This position involves tasks including but not limited to:
•Conduct mechanical and failure testing programs on metallic components and other materials using computer-controlled servo-hydraulic test machines, autoclaves or other equipment in accordance with established procedures.
•Connect data acquisition and monitoring instrumentation to test specimens.
•Perform post-test metallurgical/materials examinations or failure examinations of samples in the laboratory.
•Assist in the development of test methods, techniques and equipment.
•Analyse experimental data to assist professional staff in preparing technical reports.
•Interact with supervisory and support staff to ensure that work is completed on schedule and to the required quality standards.
•Maintain records of experimental work as per quality assurance requirements.
•Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained and help to maintain a safe, well-organized work environment.
•Interact with customers and perform off-site work at utility customer sites (local and international travel may be required).
•Ensure customer satisfaction by following good quality and safety practices in all aspects of work performed.
•Perform other duties as required.
The Qualifications
•Currently enrolled full-time in a Metallurgy/Welding/Mechanical Engineering Technology or Materials Science or equivalent engineering technology program at a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College and requiring a co-op placement
•Knowledge of mechanical and/or materials testing, metallography, or the mechanics of materials
•Experience with hand tools (e.g. drill, hammer, grinder) is required
•Basic knowledge of machining tools and common machining processes
•Demonstrated proficiency with the use of computer software for data acquisition, analysis and support for reporting (e.g. Excel, Word, ability to navigate custom data acquisition software, etc.).
•Basic knowledge of instrumentation and electronics.
•Ability to carry out and document test programs in accordance with established procedures.
•Basic knowledge and experience in the preparation of drawings using CAD software.
•Experience with metallurgical heat treating, chemical handling (WHMIS) and working with high temperature or pressurized systems is considered an asset.
•Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills.
•Strong interpersonal/teamwork skills in order to work co-operatively with a variety of staff
•Must be able to perform moderate physical tasks, physically fit: ability to move/lift items up to 40-50 lbs.
No task is so important that we cannot make the effort to do it safely.

In order to perform your work safely you may be required to wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to safety glasses, electric-shock and sole puncture protective foot gear with protective toecap, shock resistant gloves, a fall restraint harness, face respirator and a hard hat.
