As a Mechanical Engineer for Big West Oil, you will be tasked with undertaking a variety of engineering projects ranging from upgrading piping metallurgy, or repairing a valve, to replacing large complex equipment or pressure vessels, all while supporting our mission to continue to operate safely, reliably, and in an environmentally sustainable manner.

The Mechanical Engineer is an integral part of the Reliability Team. An intellectually curious individual who is willing to collaborate in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive engineering and industrial environment is essential.


Responsibilities

Play a key role in supporting Big West Oil’s mission to operate safely, reliably, predictably, and without incident at a competitive, sustainable cost.
Understand and evaluate current plant performance, working closely with Operations and Maintenance to establish priorities of work, and following through with proactive design and execution of work packages and projects.
Perform technical review of documents and drawings to support the procurement or modification of fixed and rotating equipment, including pressure vessels, tanks, separators, filters, heat transfer equipment, piping, pumps, and compressors.
Ownership of the MOC (Management of Change) process throughout the duration of projects from concept to commissioning and closeout.
Collaborate and communicate efficiently with interdepartmental support staff for the daily, routine operation of multiple assigned process units within the refinery.
Working with operations and technical teams in the field to scope/troubleshoot mechanical issues in process plants, develop alternatives, and propose and implement improvements to long-term reliability and total cost of ownership.
Carry out various studies to improve plant safety, reliability, throughput, and economics.
Provide engineering analysis and evaluation of small capital projects.
In some instances, assume responsibility for the design, management, and execution of projects up to $1,000,000 in total spend.
Responsible for personal improvement of both soft and technical skills through formal and informal training.
Develop, review, and manage engineering work for projects ranging from upgrading piping metallurgy or repairing a valve to replacing large complex equipment or pressure vessels.
Participate in the planning and execution of unit turnarounds, both planned and unplanned.
Answer technical inquiries, make technical recommendations, provide equipment and system troubleshooting, improve engineering tools, and develop engineering procedures.


Competencies / Additional Skills

Develop purchase specifications for engineered mechanical equipment that ensure the equipment meets company and industry standards, and manage the technical requirements for procuring the equipment.
Perform code calculations for ASME B31.1, B31.3, ASME BPVC Sec I and Sec VIII, sometimes with the aid of 3rd party software such as COMPRESS or CAESAR II.
Experience with both design and engineering support of the fabrication of B31.3 process piping. This would include performing basic flexibility analysis, specifying hydrotest requirements, and material and coating selection.
Check drawings such as PFDs, P&IDs, piping isometrics, equipment design drawings, layouts, section views, and fabrication details.
Select welding procedures, non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques, and testing requirements.
Select coating and insulation systems for equipment and piping.
Coordinate and or participate in the Management of Change (MOC) Process, Incident Investigations, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and Pre-start-up Safety Reviews (PSSR).
Familiarity with relevant refinery standards, including but not limited to ASME piping and pressure vessel code, various API standards, NBIC, and Utah State Boiler Code.
Familiarity working within a CMMS such as Maximo.
Familiarity working within an IDMS such as Meridium APM.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
A good attitude, a willingness to develop, and a desire to solve problems.


Requirements

BS/MS in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or Metallurgical Engineering degree.
This is an entry to mid-level engineering position ranging from zero to seven years of experience.
The employee must be able to work safely in an operating refinery environment.
