Marine Welder & Deckhand
Summary of Position
The Marine Welder/Deckhand is responsible for performing welding and metal fabrication tasks on a vessel’s deck, in addition to general deckhand duties. This role ensures that all structural and mechanical welding needs are met while supporting the vessel’s daily operations.
Qualifications
Education
•High school diploma or equivalent is required
•Certification in welding (e.g., AWS or equivalent) preferred
Experience
•Five (5) years of welding experience is required
•Maritime welding experience is preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
•Ability to work in confined spaces and challenging weather conditions
•Demonstrated proficiency in various welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, stick welding, etc
•Familiarity with shipboard safety regulations and welding procedures
•Strong teamwork and communication skills
•USCG Ordinary Seaman certification is preferred
•Demonstrated commitment to safety in the workplace
•Ability and willingness to work outdoors, often in challenging weather conditions
•Requires physical labor, including lifting, bending, and climbing
•Ability to throw a heaving line 30 feet.
•Ability to obtain, or currently possess, a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
Physical Requirements
•Work is generally in a marine environment.
•Demonstrated ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, reaching (including overhead), pushing/pulling objects, lifting up to 50 pounds, and onboarding marine craft.
•Proficient in operating hand tools, entering confined spaces, wearing breathing apparatus, and utilizing all required personal protective equipment (PPE)
•Ability to sit, walk, and stand for extended period
•Ability to work outdoors in difficult conditions, including adverse weather conditions
•Ability to maintain balance on a rocking boat
