Marine Mechanic & Deckhand
Summary of Position
The Marine Mechanic plays a crucial role in ensuring the operational efficiency and safety of marine equipment used in OPT marine operations. This position involves performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on various marine vessels and equipment, which are essential for marine operations. The mechanic will work closely with engineers and other technical staff to identify issues and implement effective solutions. By maintaining high standards of safety and compliance, the Marine Mechanic contributes to the overall productivity and reliability of marine operations. Additionally, this role will also provide general deckhand duties as required. Ultimately, this role is vital for minimizing downtime and ensuring that all marine activities are conducted smoothly and efficiently.
Qualifications
Education
•High school diploma or equivalent is required.
•Completion of a vocational training program in marine mechanics or a related field is preferred.
Experience
•Three (3) or more years prior marine mechanic experience or a similar role is required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
•Proven experience in mechanical maintenance, particularly in marine environments.
•Excellent problem-solving skills.
•Works well independently and with others.
•Organized with attention to detail.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
•Knowledge of marine safety regulations and environmental compliance standards.
•Effective communication and collaboration skills.
•Familiarity with specialized marine equipment.
•Demonstrated commitment to safety in the workplace.
•USCG Ordinary Seaman certification is a preferred.
•Ability and willingness to work outdoors on a vessel, often in challenging weather conditions
•Requires physical labor, including lifting, bending, and climbing
•Ability to throw a heaving line 30 feet.
•Ability to maintain balance while standing on a rocking boat
•Ability to obtain, or currently possess, a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
Physical Requirements
•Work is generally in a marine environment.
•Demonstrated ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, reaching (including overhead), pushing/pulling objects, lifting up to 50 pounds, and onboarding marine craft.
•Proficient in operating hand tools, entering confined spaces, wearing breathing apparatus, and utilizing all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
•Ability to sit, walk, and stand for extended period
•Ability to work outdoors in difficult conditions, including adverse weather conditions
