About This Job

The Manager of Marketing and Member Services will provide professional leadership and direction for the marketing, communications, public relations, and member service functions of Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative and its subsidiaries, Coosa Valley Propane and Coosa Valley Technologies.


I. Objectives:

A. Develops plans, programs and services that promote marketing and build member services.

B. Develops and implements effective marketing, communications and public relations programs that will provide effective co-employee relationships as well as effective Co-op consumer relationships. Emphasis to be given to image building with measure of levels of effectiveness.

C. Develops and implements programs to effectively market the Coosa Valley brand of service companies, including Coosa Valley Electric and its subsidiaries, Coosa Valley Propane and Coosa Valley Technologies.

C. Works to improve all services to members and build communication tools between Co-op employees and members.


II. Reporting Relationships:

A. Reports to: General Manager

B. Supervises: Member Service Supervisor, Energy Services Representative, Digital Media Specialist

C. Coordinates and cooperates with:

1. Every department within the Cooperative

2. Cooperative consumers

3. Various local government

4. Cooperative Staff

5. PowerSouth EC marketing and communications departments

6. Builders and HVAC contractors

7. Local businessmen


III. Responsibilities and Authorities:

A. Planning and Controls:

1. Gives and seeks advice from each of the cooperative's staff on how the total system operation can be strengthened and show positive support to all management decisions and actions taken.

2. Develops and recommends to the general manager annual budgetary information for department.

3. Submits periodic reports to the general manager on end results of programs and problems to be resolved.

4. Plans and develops short- and long-range marketing campaigns and coordinates implementation.

5. Recommends the purchase and/or replacement of equipment for department in accordance with accepted policies and procedures of the cooperative.


B. Organization:

1. Structure - Continually studies organization structure for department and recommends to the general manager any changes required; implements approved changes.

2. Staffing - Interviews and selects personnel for department in accordance with policies and procedures of the cooperative.

3. Wage and Salary - Reviews and recommends any wage and salary adjustments and changes in status for department in accordance with policies and procedures of the cooperative and within the approved budget and wage-salary plan.

4. Performance Appraisal - Appraises periodically performance of department personnel in accordance with policies and procedures of the cooperative and advises employee regarding performance standards and plans for growth and development.

5. Training

A. Assures that department personnel are trained to meet requirements of their position in accordance with policies and procedures of the cooperative.

B. Implements and coordinates a continuous training program for all employees and staff.

6. Morale - Develops and stimulates motivation of department personnel by appropriate delegation, recognition of accomplishment, coaching and counseling, and advancement according to merit, interest, and ability. Actively strives to provide a positive work climate and develop positive employee attitudes throughout the cooperative.

7. Position Descriptions - Assures that position descriptions and specifications for department personnel are accurate, comprehensive, and updated on a regular basis.

8. Supervision - Delegates responsibilities and authorities to those reporting to him/her with full recognition that he/she retains overall accountability.

C. Operations:

1. Performs Personally:

a. Educates consumers about cooperatives and how their cooperative is operated.

b. Responds to complaints consumers may have that cannot be handled in a routine manner.

c. Attends and participates in Member Service and Communications conferences and workshops.

d. Notify consumers of various types of scheduled work to be performed by power line construction, right-of-way clearing, and maintenance and inspection crews, especially contract crews.

e. Accepts invitations to serve as a member of professional, statewide, and local organizations that are allied with the cooperative.

f. Counsels with members of the department. Works to empower department employees to make decisions within established parameters. Makes decisions that are beyond their authority.

g. Directs employee relationships to maintain a pleasant working environment.

h. Provide periodic reports of progress, costs, and expectations of the energy efficiency and rebate programs.

i. Directs implementation of charitable programs.

j. Directs energy efficiency and rebate programs to ensure proper policies and procedures are being followed.

k. Coordinates with the local volunteer fire departments to promote the use of the Firemen's Friend Program.

l. Responsible for content for the monthly section of "Alabama Living".

m. Responsible for all advertisement of the Cooperative and the Coosa Valley brand as well as Coosa Valley subsidiaries when appropriate.

n. Serves as primary media contact regarding the Cooperative and its subsidiaries. Communicates with media and through social media and other outlets to ensure the timely distribution of information large-scale during power outages and other emergency situations.

o. Ensure energy audits are provided to members who request them.

p. Participate in surveys that help build understanding of the image of the cooperative with its consumers.

q. Prepare and oversee Annual Meeting and District Meetings.

r. Speak at schools, community meetings, civic clubs, etc.

s. Provide an annual plan and budget for department.

t. Provide communication to familiarize employees with activities in other areas.

u. Responsible for content of websites and social media pages for the cooperative and its subsidiaries.

v. Delegates responsibilities as appropriate to and coaches with department members to prepare employees for growth within the organization.

w. Performs other duties as required or directed by general manager.

IV. Relationships:

A. Internal:

1. General Manager - To keep informed of all department matters, projects and new developments. To confer with him/her to obtain his/her counsel and approvals as required. To provide with all reports necessary to keep him/her abreast of the programs and disposition of the department.

2. Manager of Finance - To jointly ensure timely and accurate accounting of advertising and marketing expenses. To assure advanced planning for major expenditures. To develop budget for advertising, marketing, communications and community relations programs.

3. Manager of Operations - To assist in planning and preparation of the required RUS Work Plan and other projects as required to provide and maintain quality service.

4. Manager of Engineering - To assist in planning and preparation of the required RUS Work Plan and other projects as required to provide and maintain quality service.

5. Employees - Provide communication of interest to familiarize employees with cooperative activities and boost co-employee relationships.

B. External:

1. AREA - To supply information and seek advice or assistance relating to member services, consumer relations, and other compliance specifications as required.

2. Federal and state government - To cooperate with all federal and state agencies promoting industrial and economic development.

3. Members/Consumers - To maintain friendly, Cooperative relations in the performance of duties and responsibilities and to assist in resolving complaints. To educate and notify consumers of the programs offered by the cooperative.

4. PowerSouth EC - To cooperate with PowerSouth EC in regards to rebates, reimbursements, and extended training.

5. Builders and Contractors - To educate builders with Policies and Procedures of the Cooperatives' energy efficiency and rebate programs.

6. Support organizations (AREA, NRECA) - To actively participate in education programs designed for electric utilities to maintain and enhance technical management skills.

7. Civic organizations - To actively participate for the purpose of maintaining status of valued community citizens and develop increased understanding and support of the system's objectives and services.

Education: Four years of college with a Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field.

Experience: 10 years' experience in marketing, communications or related field and a minimum of five years management experience. Must also have experience relating to the public.

Job Knowledge: Must have knowledge of marketing and advertising to include advertising, selling, and promoting products and/or services to consumers. Must have knowledge of and experience using social media platforms for business purposes. Must have knowledge of and experience with website content management. Prefer knowledge of and experience with software applications for print, digital and online media design and layout, photographic editing, and word processing. Prefer knowledge of the principles of good photography and videography.

Abilities and Skills: Must have effective, fair and consistent leadership qualities as well as interpersonal skills. Both written and verbal communication skills are key elements of this position. Must be skilled in supervision and motivation of personnel.

Working Conditions: Most of work within general office. Outside meetings will be necessary including out of town trips and meetings. This is a key supervisory position at a responsible staff management level. It is a salaried position. As such, it is part of the terms and conditions of employment for this position that the person holding the job shall work overtime, attend training programs, etc., as necessary to remain abreast of current trends and effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position.
