Union Power Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Manager of Finance and Accounting who will provide complete and accurate financial records and reports in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures and the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Uniform System of Accounts that will contribute to the efficient management of Union Power Cooperative; while continuously remaining focused on the Cooperative's Mission and Vision Statements, and the promotion of the Cooperative's Guiding Values.
- Supervises and develops subordinates using "Proactive Performance Coaching" processes and techniques.
- Recommends actions to accomplish the Cooperative's financial objectives.
- Provides leadership and direction for the Accounting department and maintains cross-training programs to ensure business continuity during planned or unplanned absences.
- Develops, implements, and enforces adherence to an effective and efficient system of controls and procedures in the areas of general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, other accounts receivable, cost accounting and fixed assets, including any related documentation.
- Maintains and reconciles a complete and systematic set of financial records and ledger accounts to record financial transactions that accurately reflect the financial status of the Cooperative and any subsidiary or related organizations.
- Responsible for the timely and accurate preparation and presentation of monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Monitors the Cooperative's financial position and cash flow to ensure the most effective utilization of assets, including coordination of all cash management programs, (long-term and short-term investments, lines of credit, loan requisitions, etc.) to ensure resources are available.
- Assists in the preparation of loan documents and monitoring compliance with all loan covenants.
- Ensures compliance with taxing authorities and is responsible for assuring all applicable taxes and fees assessed by federal, state or local entities are billed, collected and remitted timely, including the completion and filing of accompanying tax returns.
- Coordinates the preparation of annual budgets and long-range financial forecasts as required.
- Coordinates all resources and prepares reports, correspondence, and work papers, as required to prepare for any financial or compliance audits.
- Works closely with other departments on the development and design of rates and tariffs.
- Obtains and maintains a thorough working knowledge of software systems and applications that pertain to responsibilities assigned, including permissions, control form settings, tables, interfaces and integrations.
- Participates in disaster and emergency preparedness planning to ensure business continuity and maintains FEMA documentation as required.
- Maintains access to confidential payroll, banking, member and collection records.
- Receives training as directed by the Vice President - Finance & Accounting.
- Updates and maintains daily job procedures.
- Perform all duties assigned by supervision.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting required. CPA preferred.
- Minimum eight years of experience in finance and accounting required.
- Previous utility accounting experience highly preferred. Thorough knowledge of Rural Utilities Services' (RUS) uniform system of accounts and accounting methods preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience in a finance and accounting leadership role required.
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, general ledger processing (including concerns related to month-end and year-end closing), as well as financial statement and budget preparation, presentation and reporting required.
- Must be a self-driven, results oriented leader, with a positive outlook and a clear focus on high quality and business continuity, including excellent problem solving and organizational skills, ability to work under strict deadlines, and an emphasis on accurate, thorough and timely performance of duties.
- Must be able to select, develop, and supervise subordinates to meet the vision, mission, and guiding values of the Cooperative and work in a cross-functional team environment to discuss issues and achieve results.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly demonstrate professionalism and diplomacy and must be able to effectively speak in front of large groups of people and facilitate meetings.
- Must publicly represent the Cooperative well and must be able to effectively and professionally interact with other Cooperative employees, members, consultants, vendors and other contacts.
- Must have basic math skills, be able to type by touch and be able to use standard office equipment.
- Must be proficient using standard operating systems and the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Advanced MS Excel skills preferred.
- Must be able to maintain confidential information.
- Must have reliable transportation and maintain regular and predictable attendance.
