- This position is responsible for managing the NiSource Gas Major Projects station portfolio for Columbia Gas of Ohio, Columbia Gas of Maryland, Columbia Gas of Kentucky, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, and Columbia Gas of Virginia*
Job Summary
Manage a portfolio of projects or program of work consisting of natural gas assets. This may include transmission, distribution, storage, public improvement and maintenance capital projects or programs with a primary focus on project development and execution. The Manager is responsible for utilizing PM processes to meet project goals. Also manages all aspects of project performance in a proactive manner to assure project requirements are achieved. Manage the relationship between departments required to support project execution. Manager shall maintain high standards for project performance.
Essential Functions
- Manage large natural gas infrastructure projects or programs of work for NiSource. The Manager will maintain project management principals and processes for projects from initiation through close-out.
- The Manager is responsible for tracking and meeting project performance requirements across the portfolio of projects. Project management processes are developed around the principals of the Project Management Institute Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
- Provide supervision for Project Managers, Assist Project Managers, Project Specialists, and others assigned to project development and execution.
- The Manager will share responsibility for selection, training and evaluation of personnel with a peer. Assign personnel and resources to effectively execute Major Projects.
- Manager will help coordinate and support data collection and analysis for timely and accurate regulatory filings.
- Manager will coordinate routine project updates with Project Controls. Assure Project Managers provide complete and accurate updates and forecasts, and that project risks are identified and properly managed.
- Manager will analyze individual and consolidated reports to monitor progress and performance, identify and respond to developing issues for concern or opportunities.
- Maintain and update the project management policies, procedures, and assets.
- Provide visible leadership and support to maintain a safe work environment.
- Manages to meet projects performance requirements and deliverables. Select contractors or internal crews based on experience and capabilities to assure expectations for safety, quality, environmental compliance, and productivity are maintained.
- The Manager Tracks and reports key project performance indicators across the portfolio of projects and provides executive updates on individual projects and the portfolio in aggregate.
- The Manager will develop and maintain initiatives to assure Customer Value objectives are met throughout the life cycle for projects.
- The Manager will fulfill the business case for larger projects.
- Provide visible leadership and maintain high standards for projects. Perform field inspections and safety observations to support Project Managers and assure high standards are maintained.
- Maintain a working familiarity with projects and maintain customer relationship with parties or communities impacted by projects.
- Expand department proficiency and versatility in project management processes, tools, and techniques to tailor the PM tools to the specific needs of the Project Managers.
- Follow the development of Project Management Plans formatted around the PMI knowledge areas and incorporating integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communication, and risk management plans.
- Assure each Project Management Plan includes an appropriate safety management plan, and an environmental management plan, acquisition of real estate or easements, project execution plan, and close out plans.
- The project execution plan includes a detailed project schedule, analysis of potential risks, and a financial plan, all within prescribed formats.
- Manage the performance of projects through the Project Managers. Provide coaching, training, and feedback to support high performance standards. Develop and maintain programs to support employee engagement, employee development, and recognition of individual capabilities and accomplishments. Identify stretch opportunities to support individual employee development and growth. .
- Project schedules and cost tracking are maintained by a dedicated project controls group. The Manager will work closely with the project controls group track projects performance and work with Project Managers when course adjustments are required.
- Maintain established guidelines and review specifications to assure they accurately convey project requirements to potential participants. Coordinate with Construction and/or Supply Chain to maintain contracts for material and labor required to complete the projects.
- Manages the process to assure all required resources available when required.
- Participates in the process to review and select vendors or contractors to assure qualified suppliers are retained.
- Utilize NiSource supplier agreements and support supplier diversity programs.
- Employ procurement management proficiencies and processes to effectively transfer product and project risk (threats) and exploit, enhance, and share product opportunities to third parties at a fair and equitable price to establish and deliver objective value to both buyer and seller as a result of the project.
- The Manager coordinates communication between all departments. Work with Project Managers to maintain analysis of project controls data in the context of project performance. Maintain the periodic executive updates on the projects.
- Routinely visit project sites and oversee construction activities to assure projects are consistently executed according to the plan.
- Perform observations related to safety and environmental compliance requirements.
- Employ a coach and correct approach to compliance, but be willing and able to exert stop work authority when appropriate.
- Provide feedback to the Project Managers and the project teams.
- The Manager maintains a working knowledge of project requirements across functional areas, of industry best practices, and the NiSource Gas Standards.
- 4 year Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management degree, or degree in a closely related technical field from an accredited college or university and 4 years’ experience managing projects or project controls in an industrial environment.
- 2 year degree, military training, or the equivalent formal training in Engineering Technology, Construction Management or a closely related field and 8 years of experience managing projects or project controls using formal project management processes
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
- Able to effectively coordinate efforts of personnel and other departments and organizations to complete requirements of the project portfolio.
- Analytical skills to interpret project reports and determine project performance.
- Able to identify and implement appropriate corrective actions across multiple projects if performance deviates from plan.
- Able to recognize risks to projects and maintain effective corrective actions.
- Proficient in the use of business software, including Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and Power Point.
- Able to develop effective presentations for a wide range of stakeholders.
- Capability to efficiently perform duties under stringent deadlines, schedules, and conditions.
- Must be able to work a flexible work schedule.
- Certified Project Management Professional (PMP)-PMI by the Project Management Institute, or combined work experience and credentials to be eligible to complete the PMP certification Upon Hire
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operators’ license Upon Hire
