Job Summary
Manage the Protection & Control Field Engineering department in a safe, efficient and productive manner. Develop long-term strategic capital replacement plans, and ensure systems are maintained per NERC standards. Supervises and coordinates the utilization of engineering workforce to ensure that substation protective relay/control systems are installed, tested, and operate properly. Responsible for all aspects of the design, maintenance and troubleshooting of the protective relay/control systems that protect the capital investment that has been made in the NIPSCO electric transmission and distribution infrastructure. Position requires 24x7 response to electric system operations in the event of emergencies.
Essential Functions•Set direction and expectations for zero injury and zero accidents for the department.
•Guide the development of work process that ensure quality engineered products.
•Set department goals for Protection & Control Engineering groups.
•Works internally with Transmission Planning, Transmission Line Engineering, Transmission Operations, Distribution Engineering and Operations, Substation Operations, Plant Operations, Major Accounts and Construction regarding the installation and maintenance of new and existing relay and control packages.
•Ensures that Protection & Control Engineering’s methods and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices
•Oversees the management of the relay maintenance programs.
•Ensures relay and control systems are in compliance with all applicable laws, codes and regulations.
•Manages the coordination and scheduling of capital projects in collaboration with others.
•Manages the investigation of electric system interruptions for proper relay and control operation.
•Manages the technical support for the operations of all company and customer owned relay schemes.
•Generates and maintains Capital and O/M budgets for the Technical Services department.
•Manages the maintenance of all required technical records and computer-based programs.
•Inspects work and checks progress of projects and documents details for performance evaluations.
•Ensures that design and testing activities maintain uniform and safe practices.
•Solves personnel and staffing problems
•Ensure that the Technical Services department will provide 24 X 7 X 365 operational support as required
•Leads diverse team of qualified individuals with authority to hire, terminate, promote, demote, coach, develop and performance manage.
Required Qualifications For Position
•Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited college or university program.
•7+ years Engineering or Operations experience in electric utility operations
•2+ years’ Experience with protective relaying and communication systems
•Must have good planning, organizational, verbal and written communications skills. High
•High level of knowledge of electric transmission and power system operations and design. High
•General knowledge of power plant operations, renewables, rates, tariffs, State and Federal regulations and codes of conduct, and NERC and MISO policies and Company procedures. High
•Fundamental knowledge of supervisory/managerial principles. High
•Communication and motivation skills to lead technical personnel. High
•Ability to train and develop personnel. High
•Ability to interact with customers and explain technical issues. High
•Knowledge of Capital and O/M budgeting systems. Low
•Knowledge of both office and engineering computer applications. High
•Requires the ability to respond to emergency situations and work outside the normal schedule. High
•Must be capable of explaining complex technical issues and interacting with major industrial customers. High
•Duties require both office and field work. Medium
•Field environment can include exposure to high voltage and extreme environmental conditions in industrial locations. High
•Fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering principles. High
•Specific knowledge of the electric system configuration and operation of electric transmission, distribution and generation and associated relay schemes High
•Knowledge of electric safety policies/procedures, material/supply systems, and electric/material standards. High
•Knowledge of union contracts and safety policies/procedures. Low

Salary Range*:
$129,500.00 - $194,300.00
The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.*
