Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician performs mechanical and/or electrical maintenance on plant equipment to ensure optimal efficiency, reliability, and overall facility condition.


Responds to call-outs as needed to maintain plant availability. Primary responsibility for the equipment operator is performing critical lifts needed to install, repair, replace, and remove equipment. Duties include inspecting maintenance clearances, troubleshooting, disassembling, reassembling, and replacing equipment components, as well as monitoring equipment performance. While primarily focused on critical lifts, they will also support preventive maintenance activities, including troubleshooting and assisting with procedure development and spare parts recommendations.


Supports planning efforts and inventory control by following proper requisition procedures for tools, parts, and supplies. Prepares reports as required by management and plant protocols. Maintains compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, and ensures adherence to plant safety and operational procedures. Actively promotes and maintains a safe and orderly work environment.


Roles & Responsibilities

- Recognized expert in critical lifts, with broad knowledge that may extend to related functions.

- Monitor the performance and operational readiness of overhead cranes, telehandlers, aerial lifts, hoists, trolleys, and related lifting equipment including straps, shackles, and lifting devices.

- Respond promptly to mechanical or electrical issues impacting equipment operations, ensuring minimal disruption to production or logistics workflows.

- Strictly follow OSHA, ASME B30, and manufacturer safety standards for crane inspection, maintenance, and operation

- Identify opportunities for improvements to lift-related activities, equipment reliability, and safety

- Accountable for tasks where errors can have significant consequences and may not be subject to direct oversight.

- Provide input on spare parts inventory, system lifecycle planning, and critical spare identification for crane assets

- Resolves highly technical issues with guidance, occasionally consulting with team leadership, and serves as a resource for peers facing similar challenges.

- May coordinate and support others in completing assignments within defined schedules and priorities.

- Frequently delivers hands-on training and mentorship in specialized technical areas to other team members.


Key Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of technical/vocational training is strongly preferred.

- Professional with 3+ years of directly related experience with critical lifts, including a solid understanding of health and safety regulations.

- Knowledge of load charts, lift planning, boom angles, counterweight calculations, and equipment capacities

- Certified Crane Operator (CCO) certification or equivalent (e.g., NCCCO, CIC, or state-recognized program) for small cranes (preferred or required, depending on jurisdiction)

- Telehandler operator experience

- Skilled in performing daily pre-use inspections of crane and telehandler systems (e.g., hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical components)

- Able to safely maneuver loads of various sizes and weights using proper rigging techniques and visual or radio communication

- Experience working on or around uneven terrain, elevated work zones, and in close proximity to people or plant equipment


Additional Qualifications Desired

- Hands-on experience with maintenance of industrial steam boilers, battery storage systems, and high temperature fluid loops.

- Proficient in welding and/or operating machine tools such as lathes and mills.


Work Location: Onsite - Big Stone, South Dakota
