The Kapuskasing Power Plant is a 40 MW combined-cycle facility strategically located at 51 Gough Road in Kapuskasing, Ontario. Commissioned in 1997 and powered by a single gas turbine, the plant delivers reliable, high-efficiency energy to the region. Its streamlined design and proven performance make it a vital contributor to Ontario’s power infrastructure.

Opportunity Summary

The Maintenance Millwright Technician is an essential member of the team at the Kapuskasing Power Plant, responsible for implementing mechanical preventative and restoration maintenance programs while supporting operations and ECI colleagues in a cross-functional environment. This role involves planning, scheduling, and supervising work within their area of responsibility, as well as managing material selection and inventory for the facility. By utilising safe and effective maintenance techniques, the Technician helps ensure the plant meets its reliability and availability goals.

Your scope of responsibility as Maintenance Millwright Technician will include the following primary functions: Mechanical Maintenance and Reliability

Performs mechanical maintenance activities to ensure high plant availability and reliability, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.
Takes responsibility during planned maintenance outages to ensure necessary mechanical work is completed efficiently and safely.
Maintains and repairs rotating equipment, mechanical systems, and associated support systems in accordance with plant procedures and industry best practices.
Takes pride of ownership in tools used for daily activities and maintenance work, ensuring they are maintained in good condition and used correctly.
Understands and correctly applies purchasing guidelines for materials and tools when required.
Maintains safety and environmental monitoring equipment in compliance with regulatory requirements as it pertains to mechanical systems.
Ensures all maintenance activities are conducted with the highest safety standards and environmental consideration.
Supports the development of long-range equipment plans and risk management practices by proactively identifying mechanical issues, analysing maintenance findings, and leveraging knowledge of equipment history to recommend improvements.
Contributes to the review and improvement of maintenance procedures based on technical expertise and equipment experience.
Participates in the development of quality assurance standards and contributes to audits, inspections, and assessments for continuous improvement.
Understands the fundamentals of ARS (NERC) standards and fulfils maintenance responsibilities related to compliance.
Utilises IT systems within the organization and is fully proficient with the CMMS and document management systems for daily work, work order completion, and historical recordkeeping.
Provides accurate and timely maintenance information for internal and external reporting purposes.
Assists in the development of budgets by providing input on mechanical maintenance needs and long-term planning.
Supports plant operations and reliability by collaborating with the operations team, providing input and feedback during planning for major maintenance activities.
Coordinates with contractors and suppliers as needed to perform assigned mechanical tasks.
Travels to other sites as required to support maintenance activities across the fleet.
Completes seasonal yard maintenance and other mechanical or facility-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Support, Compliance, And General Responsibilities

Promotes community relations and site representation by demonstrating NAES corporate policies and values in daily work.
Maintains vigilance regarding site security and promptly reports any suspected breaches.
Supports the plant team in maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
Responsible for achieving goals defined as part of the incentive compensation targets.
Performs other duties as assigned by the team leader or supervisor.

Working Relationships

The Maintenance Millwright Technician reports directly to the Plant Manager. Additionally, the Maintenance Millwright Technician cooperates with all other plant personnel as needed in the daily operation of the plant.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds).

The power plant environment may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which can include hard hats, safety glasses or other eye protection, respirators or air masks, hearing protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), heat-resistant gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required in accordance with Canadian standards such as CSA Z94.4. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility in compliance with applicable provincial and federal legislation.

Fitness for Duty

All employees participate in a Fitness for Duty Programme, which includes a post-offer medical assessment and substance screening. Ongoing random testing may be conducted post-employment.

Work Schedule

This position will occasionally require extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and statutory holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “on-call” status may also be required.

Technical Credentials and Training

A valid journeyman trade certification in Millwright, Millwright/Machinist, or Millwright/Welder is required to be considered for this role; in addition, a related Technology Certification would be considered an asset.
Must also possess extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in maintaining power generation or related industrial equipment.


Operational Expertise and Competencies

Minimum of three years of progressively responsible work experience in power generation or large industrial facilities.
Proven ability to inspect, repair, and refurbish machinery, with preferred experience working alongside control systems.
Solid understanding of equipment types commonly used in power plants, acquired through a combination of formal training and practical experience at manufacturers’ facilities and job sites.
Proficient in the safe operation of hand and power tools, test equipment, and calibration devices.
Experience using computer-based maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work planning and documentation.
Skilled in material ordering and warehouse operations to support maintenance activities.
Experience supervising contract crews is an asset.
Ability to accurately read and interpret computer-generated data, instrumentation, gauges, and colour-coded indicators.
Manual dexterity necessary to operate keyboards, maintenance tools, and equipment effectively.
Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s licence in Canada and maintain it in good standing throughout employment.
