Responsible for managing all aspects of in-bound and out-bound freight, routing guides, Brokerage and Customs compliance. Provide structure and guidance to all Operations site logistics activities. Manage Hartford and Herkimer freight spend and drive savings. Improve service where required. Define the optimal freight network. Responsible for managing both short- and long-term strategies for freight management through all modes of transport for the Hartford and Herkimer ELG Utica Alloys network.
· Develop and implement strategic logistics plans aligned with business goals.
· Establish yearly objectives, action plans, and key success metrics for Hartford and Herkimer freight.
· Create and maintain monthly rolling freight cost forecasts for Hartford and Herkimer sites.
· Manage impacts of tariffs and trade regulations (international and domestic) on Hartford and Herkimer operations.
· Support operations and commercial functions in receiving, moving, and coordinating cargo, bins, containers, etc.
· Oversee daily domestic and international shipping (FTL, LTL, parcel, intermodal, inbound/outbound).
· Quote and negotiate international freight monthly, domestic freight quarterly.
· Ensure timely and secure movement of cargo through proactive tracking, issue resolution, and coordination.
· Actively monitor container status; manage timing and communication of deliveries and pickups.
· Troubleshoot freight issues and oversee cargo security, documentation, and theft prevention processes.
· Verify proof of delivery and communicate order status proactively with brokers and customers.
· Develop an operating model for US logistics.
· Develop and manage freight and logistics budgets; forecast monthly freight costs.
· Collaborate with finance on customer freight bill backs and invoice accuracy across Hartford and Herkimer.
· Code all incoming freight invoices for Hartford and Herkimer and ensure spending accuracy.
· Achieve cost targets and initiate corrective actions through continuous budget monitoring.
· Drive ongoing freight data analytics (e.g., freight costs, demurrage/detention, loading times).
· Negotiate rates and service levels with 3PLs, brokers, carriers, and freight forwarders.
· Manage contracts and relationships with external stakeholders (warehouses, brokers, freight forwarders).
· Ensure exclusive use of brokers with formal agreements and full compliance with contract clauses.
· Establish and track KPIs (e.g., cost per unit, on-time delivery, transit times, claims, loading times).
· Conduct data-driven performance analysis and share insights with senior management.
· Continuously improving logistics processes using data and trend analysis.
· Lead, mentor, and coach logistics team members on complex topics.
· Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
· Collaborate closely with Sales, Customer Service, Procurement, Operations, and IT to align logistics with business needs.
· Optimize use of logistics systems (TMS, WMS) and drive process improvements.
· Ensure compliance with applicable laws, DOT regulations, and internal policies.
· Uphold confidentiality, ethics, and integrity in all logistics activities.
· Support cargo safety, documentation control, and theft prevention.
· Develop and implement concepts for cargo safety and security at highest possible level.
· A verification of the proof of delivery and proactive communication with brokers and customers about the status of the delivery of order, ensuring the products arrive at their destination as expected.
· Close management of the brokers’ activities, ensuring the exclusive use of brokers with formal contracts and compliance with contractual clauses in the selection of carriers.
2. 5-7 years of progressive experience in logistics, transportation, or supply chain management, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
3. Proven advanced knowledge of logistics management principles, theories and processes.
4. Demonstrated Leadership ability. Lead by example and motivate others to create a challenging, empowering and collaborative working environment.
5. Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Strong working knowledge of ERP systems.
7. Maintain and provide current understanding of industry best practices and technology trends.
8. Strong critical thinking and analytic skills with the ability to use a structured approach to understand, analyze, and solve complex problems/issues.
9. Ability to multitask and contribute to a cross functional collaborative environment.
10. Detail oriented; ability to meet deadlines and a sense of urgency.
11. Knowledge of US transportation regulations (DOT, HazMat, etc.).
