Open Job Position – Line Locate Technician I
Beginning Monday, June 23, 2025, Riviera Utilities will begin taking applications to fill a job vacancy for Line Locate Technician I. We are considering applicants with qualifications in the following range, salary commensurate with education and experience.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or an acceptable equivalent diploma (GED). Experience and familiarization with the use of computers, maps, and other electronic devices, especially sonar, is desirable.
Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.
During a typical month you will drive a line locate vehicle between 1500 and 2500 miles in the normal course of your duties. Employees must possess and maintain a clean driving record. Multiple convictions for speeding, convictions of reckless driving, DUI or suspension of driving privileges will exclude you from consideration for employment/continued employment.

Line Locate Technician I

JOB SUMMARY
This is an entry level responsible position responsible for locating and marking underground utilities, updating records, and assisting with the development of maps and other electronic data. The successful candidate must possess the ability to work both alone and with a team for the purpose of locating and marking underground utilities. Accuracy is of high importance as failure to accurately identify locations of underground utilities can result in damage to equipment, injuries, or death. This position is responsible for accurately locating and marking Riviera Utilities’ underground infrastructure, including electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, and fiber optic lines in direct support of public safety and damage prevention efforts in the community.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•Locates and marks underground utilities using a variety of electronic equipment.
•Interpret utility maps, service records, construction drawings, as builds, and GIS data to determine the precise location of Riviera Utilities’ assets.
•Clearly mark utilities in accordance with State 811 laws using paint, flags, or other approved methods.
•Respond to Alabama 811 One Call tickets in a timely and professional manner, including emergency, 2nd notice, and high-priority locates.
•Maintains inventory of locating and marking supplies, flags, paint, batteries for electronics.
•Assists in the administration, sorting, filing and follow-up of underground utility locate requests.
•Resolves questions or conflicts regarding locate requests, marking of lines, responds in a timely manner to remarking requests and emergency requests for assistance.
•Troubleshoots issues using locating equipment, maps, and technical knowledge.
•Contacts appropriate personnel to assist with updating maps as needed.
•Assists in the development, drafting and maintenance of miscellaneous diagrams, maps, and electronic data regarding locations of Riviera’s underground facilities.
•Coordinates and collaborates with various contractors and construction companies.
•Makes extensive use of a laptop to review maps and locations of underground utilities.
•Observes and monitors daily operations to ensure locate requests are being completed in a timely manner.
•Communicates effectively with contractors, customers, municipal agencies, and internal personnel to resolve issues or clarify locate information.
•Coordinates efforts to meet timeline requirements for locates.
•Documents field work using mobile technology, software, and standardized reporting methods.
•Determines reason(s) for not meeting deadlines and implements solutions to resolve issue(s).
•Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and compliance standards set by Riviera Utilities and applicable regulatory bodies.
•Attends safety and training meetings on a regular basis.
•Maintains assigned tools, vehicles, and equipment.
Other Functions
•Receives training and stays abreast of Alabama 811 laws.
•Upon successful completion of preliminary training period (to be determined by Line Locate Supervisor), remains available for overtime (as needed), and standby (including nights and weekends) for emergency ticket response.
•Remains available after hours for emergency locates requests.
•Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment will primarily be outside in all types of weather. Employees will be exposed to high winds, rain, blowing sand/dirt, high and low temperatures typical of south Alabama. Rain suits and PPE are provided but do not eliminate the exposure. The employee will work near moving parts, on or near highways with exposure to moving civilian vehicles, regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. Work occurs around and near sewer pipes, water pipes, gas lines and their associated equipment and hazards. Occasional travel for training or obtaining certification may be required.
