Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent or Shaft Superintendent, the primary role of the Lead Shaft Electrician is to ensure that the electrical project progresses according to plan and is completed to standards. The Lead Shaft Electrician will perform or be involved in all phases of the electrical work.
General RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform safely and timely emergency repairs to equipment as required
- Performs hands on work for shaft and underground electrical installation, maintenance, testing and equipment repairs
- Assemble, install, test, troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment and associated electrical and electronic controls. These may include hoisting & diesel electrical plants.
- Perform hands on work for all phases of the project pertaining to the installation, maintenance and repair of all electrical systems in the shaft and underground work areas.
- Organize and plan the work for himself and his crew, expected to resolve most problems.
- Complete electrical installations from blueprints, sketches or diagrams
- Install the type and sizes cables, wires, panel boards, safety switches, combination starters, lighting and other equipment necessary to achieve the required results
- Make and provide reports for inspections
- Diagnose electrical problems and initiates corrective measures
- Participate in incident/accident investigations and reporting.
- Suggest changes to plans and processes to the Shaft Maintenance Supervisor or Shaft Superintendent that will improve the efficiency or quality of the project
- Ensure optimal communication across shifts by maintaining and reading logs, meeting with peers and coordinating work with other shaft and underground crews
- Request and coordinate assistance from maintenance group to affect necessary repairs to maximize productive time
- Work on activities in response to unforeseen or unplanned developments
- Provide support to project management team as required
- Enforce the project site operating and employee policies
- Review progress on an ongoing basis

- Having the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
- Following Redpath Canada Limited health and safety standards and systems, including the Five Point Safety System and the Cardinal Rules, and reporting any unsafe acts or conditions
- Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment required in the performance of the work.
- Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet.
- Comply with the Act and Mining Regulations that apply to the work area
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Electrical trades certificate of competence
- Experience in the installation of low, medium, and high voltage installation and repairs
- Basic literacy (read, write, basic math and read blue print) required
- Ontario Hard Rock Underground Service Type Common Core (or other provincial equivalent) (required)
- Minimum 3 years underground shaft mining experience
- Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner
- Able to plan by forecasting, sourcing materials before there needed
- Must be able to communicate written and verbal instructions to subordinates
- Must be capable of reading & understanding electrical drawings
- Must be capable of reading and interpreting basic electrical instruments and testers
- Must have skills to help train new employees, apprentices, etc., in the area on day to day operations, on the procedures for operating equipment and assist apprentices in acquiring their needed skills
