National Grid is hiring a Lead Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineer. This position will sit in on our Hicksville Location but will travel to our various plant sites across Long island. Job Purpose
The Lead Controls Engineer, reporting to the Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Manager within the Power Engineering Department (PED), plays a pivotal role in advancing our energy initiatives. This position involves collaboration with internal and external teams on innovative projects, regulatory compliance, and enhancements to our existing fleet of steam and gas turbine units on Long Island, as well as exploring renewable energy opportunities. The engineer will conduct comprehensive technical, financial, and operational evaluations of both new and existing Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) assets, which include process control instrumentation, pneumatics, PLCs, DCSs, control wiring, communication networks, and safety instrumented systems. Responsibilities encompass evaluating project design, licensing, process safety, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations, while developing design specifications and procedures for various projects.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead engineering efforts throughout the design, construction, and operational phases of projects focused on retrofitting existing generating assets and developing new energy solutions.
- Conduct independent asset evaluations to identify maintenance needs and capital investment opportunities.
- Prepare and guide the development of work scopes, purpose and necessity documents, cost estimates, schedules, and project sanctioning documents.
- Execute safety, environmental, and financial risk analyses to ensure project viability.
- Perform engineering calculations and studies to substantiate project scopes.
- Develop and implement specifications, standards, and procedures for engineering projects.
- Provide technical assessments of new energy development projects, including energy storage, solar, relay protection, and combustion turbines.
- Research and assess emerging technologies for potential application in new projects and existing assets, delivering value to customers and load-serving entities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is required.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or 7 years with a Master’s degree.
- New York State Professional Engineer (PE) License is required.
- Valid New York State Driver’s License is required.
- Demonstrated ability to promote innovative ideas and achieve objectives with energy and creativity.
- Self-motivated with strong project management skills and the ability to lead initiatives.
- Proven capability to engage and collaborate with diverse teams to achieve successful outcomes.
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and adapting to change.
- Analytical and solution-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple high-visibility projects.
- Experience collaborating with internal and external project teams.
- Knowledge of power generation equipment and support systems.
- Knowledge of computer communication networks preferred.
- Familiarity with project management principles, including product development, construction, commissioning, and operations.
- Understanding of project cost/benefit and risk analysis methodologies.
- Excellent communication skills for conveying ideas, technical designs, and engineering concepts.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with AutoCAD is preferred.
- Experience in fire protection engineering is preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical codes and standards (e.g., NFPA, NEMA, UL, IEEE) is preferred.
- Familiarity with NERC and NPCC standards is preferred.

$145,000 - $170,000 a year
This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
