Job Description
Hexium is hiring a laser scientist to develop high-power laser and optical systems. In this role you will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop a laser-plasma isotope separation process to supply the clean energy and medical industries. You will be responsible for working with the team to define requirements for laser/optical systems and leading their development and/or procurement. Your work will focus on high average power and high peak power nanosecond-pulsed, narrow-bandwidth lasers, as well as optical systems for conditioning, routing, and measuring the light they produce.
Responsibilities
•Work with a multidisciplinary team to specify laser and optical system requirements.
•Work with suppliers and collaborators to develop high average power, narrow-bandwith, nanosecond pulsed laser systems.
•Design and implement optical systems such as acousto-optic modulators and OPOs / OPAs for nonlinear amplification and frequency conversion.
•Design optical systems to condition, measure, and transport laser light.
•Install and integrate lasers into the isotope separation system.
Required Qualifications
•Masters or PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a closely related field.
•Experience designing and building lasers, laser subsystems, or complex optical systems to measure or condition laser pulses.
•Experience specifying, budgeting, purchasing, installing, and operating laser systems, detectors, optics, spectrometers, or similar equipment.
•Proficiency with laser alignment, hands-on optical system setup, and using pulsed laser diagnostics.
Preferred Qualifications
•Experience with resonance ionization spectroscopy, or other laser spectroscopy techniques.
•Hands-on experience with pulsed, high-power, and high-energy laser systems.
•Hands-on experience with pulsed Ti:Sapphire laser systems, optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) or optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs).
•Experience with narrow-bandwidth, frequency-locked lasers.
•Experience building laser systems from design through operation.
•Experience with software tools like Zemax, CodeV, ASLD, fiberdesk or Miró for optical system design and simulating light propagation and amplification in matter.
