Overview:

To develop a basic knowledge and working ability in Laboratory functions while assisting in the tasks of sampling, analysis, and treatments of various systems. Responsibilities: Position may be filled at the Laboratory Technician, Assistant, or Trainee level based on the successful candidate’s background, education, and experience. Additional responsibilities may be included for higher levels of the role. GENERAL DUTIES

The normal duties may include but are not limited to:

Employee will be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures and practices.
Employee acting in conjunction with supervision or individually as directed by supervision must be willing to direct the training of other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Laboratory Trainee or other duties with which the employee is familiar.
Employee will, when directed by supervision, report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in the training activities.
Employee will carry out assignments in training for and/or performing fire fighting and first aid.
Employee will exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections of this job Demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by Louisville Gas and Electric to assure correct classification of employees.
Employee will, during the normal performance of his duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury.
Employee will perform duties of lower or higher classifications that are incidental to the job and are within his/her capabilities including those needed for the purpose of training in the requirements of the higher classifications.
Employee will keep all equipment, tools, materials and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
Employee will report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.
Employee will perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment.
Employee will compile information and generate reports, forms and documents as required.
Employee will represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance and attitude.


SPECIFIC DUTIES

Duties which may include, but are not limited to:

Employee will procure and analyze samples of process water for and within steam generators.
Employee will as instructed, operate chemical treatment equipment, including that associated with both process water and steam generator systems.
Employee will as instructed, regenerate water conditioning equipment.
Employee will as instructed, keep chemical regenerate tanks and other chemical tanks and/or storage bins at proper operating levels.
Employee will assist in the preparation of analytical reagents.
Employee will assist in the maintenance of analytical control equipment, including demineralizer, boiler and condensate systems.
Employee will assist in the sampling and analysis of the cooling water systems.
Employee will become knowledgeable of basic power plant operations.
Employee will become knowledgeable of the Operating Card System.
Employee will as required input analysis, data, , into the station PIMS data base.
Employees will process and analyze samples of reactant from the SDRS process.
Employee will assist with the Reactant Preparation System.
Employee will assist with the analysis operation of the sewage treatment plant.
Employee will assist in the analysis of oil samples.

Qualifications: Position may be filled at the Laboratory Technician, Assistant, or Trainee level based on the successful candidate’s background, education, and experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO: GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must meet all general qualifications of employment.
Employee must be able to speak, understand, read and write English, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Employee must have education or knowledge equivalent to that normally represented by satisfactory completion of the requirements of a high school diploma, or equivalent.
Employee must be able to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work.
Employee must be willing to become familiar with the Company Safety Rules and willingly comply with such rules.
Employee must have a valid state driver's license and pass the Transportation Department's driver's test for operating Company vehicles, including those with a manual transmission.
Employee must be willing to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions.
Employee must be willing to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.
Employee must be in good health and be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, which include heavy manual labor.
Employee must possess the willingness and ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher classifications.
Employee must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports.
Employee must be able to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches.
Employee must be willing to carry through work assignments, and must be willing to conduct himself/herself in a manner that encourages cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her.
Employee must successfully complete such entry level testing programs as are promulgated by Louisville Gas and Electric to measure job responsive aptitude, ability to retain knowledge and problem solving skills.


SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must have a normal color vision acuity in addition to normal health and without impairment to the senses.
Employee must have a working knowledge of chemistry as evidenced by his/her satisfactory completion of 2-year college chemistry or science degree.
Employee must know how to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, basic algebraic expressions, and formulas.
Employee must be alert to potential hazards and have quickness of mind and body to act in case of mishap.
Employee must have a functioning sense of smell for flue gas, acids, etc.
