Job Description:

Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Journeyman Lineworker (Trouble Work) to join our Capital Field Services crew. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Journeyman Lineworker (Trouble Work) do for us?

They work independently without supervision performing new construction, troubleshooting, and repairing work on overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines. They may connect and disconnect secondary and services, connect and disconnect meters, exchange, and read meters and/or perform collection activities. They are expected to demonstrate commitment to the safety of all Idaho Power Company (IPC) employees and our customers. They should be able to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE


Knowledge of:

Lines core processes for new business, operations, outage response, and unplanned maintenance
Lines construction standards, methods, materials, and equipment and chemical safety procedures
Power line system switching
IPC C.A.R.E.S safety program and Public Event process documentation


Skills in:

The use of personal computers, Microsoft Office and other job-related software applications used for mapping, record keeping and field order completion (OpenGrid)
ArcFM


Ability to:

Assess line faults on overhead and underground facilities, determine resources/materials needed for repairs
drive and operate line vehicles, such as line trucks and bucket trucks, snow cats, snowmobiles and ATVs/UTVs, backhoes and mini-excavators
Operate underground locating/fault equipment
Work independently and with others with/without supervision
Teach and mentor other employees and provide First Responder mentoring
Perform power line system switching
Read meters and perform collection work
Read and understand construction drawings and diagrams, plat, feeder and work order maps
Meet with customers
Perform periodic Distribution Designer tasks
Perform vehicle inspections and maintain safe, clean, orderly, mechanically maintained company vehicles


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


Education:

High school diploma or GED


Experience:

Certificate of completion of an Apprentice Lineman training program that is recognized by the Office of Apprenticeship (OA), including at least 4 years of relevant line work experience


OR

6 years documented experience as a Lineman in distribution and/or transmission, 2 of which must be documented at a journeyman level


OR

Any IPC employee currently employed as a Journeyman Lineman


Preferred:

Previous on-call troubleshooting experience at IPC and/or Completed First Responder training or the ability to complete this training at first available course offering (expectation is within 6 months of hire)


Licenses & Certifications:

Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card and current DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 383
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain prior to hire
Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position involves maintenance and repair of transformers at ground level and vault. This can require up to 150 lbs. push/pull activities, lifts up to 50 lbs., frequent kneeling, standing and crouching, as well as climbing into the vault. This job also involves climbing up to 50 ft. and occasionally up to 70-90 ft. utility poles to install/repair, while carrying 40 lbs. of safety gear. Other activities required are line pushing, wire splicing, service and meter change outs, and hot stick/shotgun use. This will include the use of extension ladders (including overhead lifting to remove and replace ladder from truck), carrying ladder and tools up to ½ mile, occasional digging and frequent above shoulder work including the use of a manual trimmer. To ensure the manufacturer's rated capacity of climbing hooks, ladders, and aerial equipment are not exceeded, applicants body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate. Satisfactory completion of all required training as identified. Additional safety related training may be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work on call or overtime when needed and respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours. Occasional travel and overnight stays. Employees will live within the 30-mile drive distance boundaries on the appropriate operations center map with the expectation that under normal driving conditions they will respond to their home operations center in 45 minutes or less, if required to stand on call.
