Position Summary

The CPS Energy Internship Program is designed to meet the industry’s rapidly changing workforce needs by providing local San Antonio college students with public utility career experience. Through the internship program students are paired with a mentor to acquire meaningful hands-on experience that expands their understanding of how the industry works and exposes them to essential skills they must acquire or develop to be successful. The internship is not only meant for the intern to learn how to perform, but to also understand the rationale behind the strategies that are being used.

Regulatory Compliance Analyst Intern will work with subject matter experts (SMEs) in preparing and demonstrating compliance to regulatory requirements. The intern will work with compliance team and business area experts to document processes, monitor and track rules, and evaluate and develop tasks pertaining to ERCOT Protocols and Operating Guides, Public Utility Commission rules, and NERC Regulatory requirements. Work includes regulatory process mapping, reviewing and interpreting standards, reviewing processes and procedures, and meeting with SMEs to validate that they have information or artifacts that support them following a process. Work will primarily orient in the Main Office complex, but may also extend to trips to the power plants, controls centers, or transmission substations.


Tasks and Responsibilities

- Coordinate with manager or designate on objective or activity for the day.

- The Intern will assist in documenting regulatory processes using standard Microsoft tools.

- The Intern will perform duties similar to regulatory compliance analyst.

- The Intern will learn how to review regulatory standards.

- The Intern will learn how to draft and review business unit processes and procedures and assess compliance artifacts.

- The intern will observe and understand CPS Energy’s methodology of monitoring new and current standards.

- The intern will work with business units to modify processes and procedures.

- The intern will learn about the Energy Market and how CPS Energy participates.

- The intern will learn fundamentals of grid reliability and compliance including generation and transmission perspectives.

- Mon-Fri arrives on pre-determined schedule.

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas and concepts to those with less technical background.

Ability to interact with personnel at all levels of the organization and serve as a liaison for craft and management personnel.

Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision, be a self-starter, and be able to meet goals and deadlines with minimum supervision.

Ability to distinguish colors to determine severity of equipment conditions or changes in operating processes.

Knowledgeable and supportive of all safety and environmental rules, policies, and procedures.

Ability to work safely at heights, in confined spaces, around electrical facilities, in extreme temperature ranges, and in adverse temperature conditions.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects, and to use technical skills to focus ideas onto small scale projects.

Effective problem solving and decision-making skills to make clear and precise decisions.

Ability to develop and draft procedural documents – technical writing.

Effective PC skills (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio).

Ability to work in office and occasionally at any CPS Energy power plant location within Bexar County (San Antonio, TX) as directed.


A minimum GPA of 2.5.


Preferred Qualifications

- Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License

- PRA Background Check clearance

- NERC Training

Minimum Education

Actively pursuing a Bachelor degree in Accounting, Auditing, Information Systems, Engineering or related degrees.


Required Certifications


Working Environment

Generally, work indoors in office environment. However, there will be field trips to power plants and substations. Intern will need to follow PPE and Safety guidelines.

Indoor work revolves around facilitating and participating in meetings, operating a computer, conducting webex or Teams meeting’s, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion.

Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events.

Outdoor work revolves around performing walk down audits/surveys of power generation facilities. Involves climbing stairs, traversing generator and control room floors and wearing appropriate PPE.


Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Sedentary work involves sitting. Job requires employees to perform a lot of walking, doing field audits, sedentary drafting up procedures and participating in meetings.
