Working in a team environment, the Indigenous and Community Energy Advisor assists in developing community electricity plans which includes, Integrated Resource Planning, Indigenous government and community electrification engagement with the potential for project development. The Indigenous and Community Energy Advisor assists the Director, Business and Community Energy Development to identify and execute business development opportunities and is responsible for identifying and securing external funding for projects and/or programs. The Indigenous and Community Energy Advisor, establishes and maintains effective and sound corporate relationships with applicable representatives from Indigenous governments, GNWT, communities, local businesses, corporations and other agencies.

Represents the Corporation, in various venues such as conferences, community boards, and business chambers and community events, to develop and maintain ongoing effective and productive customer and community relations.

Assists in the development and updating of the community Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) developed to increased electrification to meet the GNWT’s energy and climate change goals.
The IRP shall be developed in consultation with other NTPC divisions in compliance goals established by the NWT Public Utilities Board. The IRP will consider long-term capital plans, demand side management, load growth, electrification of end uses, generation mix scenarios to future milestones to 2030 and 2050.
Through the IRP, engages with Indigenous governments, communities and other utilities on their electricity and energy future.
Assists in the development and advancement of business partnerships with Indigenous governments and communities for possible renewable energy investment by NTPC.
Assists with the consultation and engagement for project agreements with Indigenous governments to secure support for new energy projects. Works with internal resources and external advisors to structure and negotiate investments by Indigenous governments.
Supports community leaders and energy stakeholders to understand proven technologies that are applicable to site and regionally specific opportunities.
Coordinates with the GNWT and Federal Government to identify and secure funding for NTPC capital and operational projects, including the development of funding applications and the administration of and reporting of funding agreements.
Assists in the development of new business opportunities for industrial and commercial customers. This includes identifying economic and/or social benefits to rate payers through mineral mining opportunities, commercial activities, manufacturing operations and residual heat use.
Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field such as Business, Economics, Science, Indigenous Studies or Engineering AND a minimum two years’ experience working with Indigenous communities, preferably in the context of energy, infrastructure, or economic development. Equivalencies may be considered.
Knowledge of lands and resources and self-government agreements in the NWT, their intent, purpose and implications would be considered an asset.
Understanding of renewable energy technologies and their application in northern and remote communities.
Experience in business development, including identifying opportunities and supporting investment decisions.
Familiarity with regulated vs. non-regulated utility operations is an asset.
Ability to travel to communities and represent the organization in diverse settings.
Requires sensitivity to the political, legal, safety and environmental concerns facing the Corporation.
Computer skills to operate software programs related to word processing, spreadsheet, databases, electronic mail, Internet, etc.
Requires the ability to adapt general policy directives into specific tasks, monitors the progress and initiates corrective measures to achieve the desired result.
A comprehensive understanding of local, regional, and northern political and social economic conditions and values.
Class 5 driver's license is required.
Satisfactory criminal record check is required.

Salary for this position ranges from $54.10/hr to $65.72/hr plus location allowance of approximately $3,823 per annum. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan. This position is located in Hay River, NT. Relocation assistance may be provided.
