Health & Safety Assurance Specialist, Calgary, AB
In your role as Health & Safety Assurance Specialist, you will provide expert support to ensure effective implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the MEG’s health & safety programs. Based at the corporate office, this role supports both strategic planning and operational execution by leading audits, analyzing HSE performance, and facilitating compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with business units, operations teams, and senior leadership to strengthen the company’s safety culture and risk management practices.
Your day-to-day will include:
+ Analyze safety performance data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights to drive risk mitigation and continuous improvement
+ Facilitate the development and review of HSE policies, standards, and procedures in alignment with regulatory requirements (e.g., OH&S, Energy Safety Canada)
+ Participate in the planning and execution of corporate HSE assurance programs, OEMS (Operations Excellence Management System) assessments, and management reviews
•Compliance & Regulatory Oversight:
+ Monitor and evaluate adherence to Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, industry standards, and company policies
+ Assist in preparing submissions and documentation for regulatory audits and certifications
+ Conduct internal audits and safety inspections across various departments, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring corrective actions are implemented
+ Support risk assessments and hazard identification processes, promoting proactive safety measures
•Reporting & Documentation:
+ Prepare detailed reports on safety performance, audit findings, and compliance status
+ Maintain accurate records of safety assurance activities
+ Assist in developing and delivering safety training programs to enhance awareness and ensure understanding of safety protocols
+ Provide coaching and technical support to site-level HSE teams to ensure alignment with corporate expectations
+ Collaborate with operational teams to develop and implement safety improvement initiatives
+ Monitor regulatory changes and industry best practices to recommend updates to existing systems or practices
•Incident Investigation Support:
+ Assist in incident investigations, facilitate root cause analyses, and ensure effective corrective actions are developed and implemented
+ Liaise with regulatory bodies and internal teams to foster a safety-focused culture
+ Track and report HSE metrics and KPIs to internal stakeholders, ensuring data accuracy and relevance for performance monitoring
What you will bring to MEG:
•Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or a related discipline
•Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health & Safety Officer (CHSO) or similar certification is preferred
•Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a health & safety role, preferably in the oil and gas or energy sector
•Experience conducting audits, inspections, and risk assessments
•Strong knowledge of Alberta OHS regulations and industry standards (e.g., CSA Z1000, ISO 45001)
•Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
•Strong analytical mindset and experience with HSE data management systems
•Ability to analyze data, prepare reports, and present findings clearly
•Committed mindset towards achieving a worksite where serious incidents are eliminated by caring for ourselves and all others above all else
•Collaborative workstyle that recognizes team achievement and collective contribution ahead of individual reward
•Knowledge of how management systems work, and how loss-prevention systems like OEMS function effectively
•Positive attitude and demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles to achieve solutions
•Must be able to occasionally travel to our Christina Lake facilities near Conklin, Alberta as the position requires. This involves flying from Calgary to our Christina Lake aerodrome and staying in our on-site camp facilities
